SALT LAKE TRIBUNE endorses Obama!
Also, the Kansas City Star -- neither have EVER endorsed a Democrat. Two more red-state endorsements!

6. The Tribune is going to be shunned. That's very brave of them.
Wow. That's great about the KC Star, but the Salt Lake Tribune is going to lose a lot of money because of this, through cancelled subscriptions and pulled ad revenue.

Good on them.

8. do you live in Salt Lake?
I don't mean to be rude but the Salt Lake Tribune is not a Mormon publication and has a reputation here of being anti-Mormon and liberal. (It isn't, like no major media is liberal anymore).

They took holy hell in 2004 when they endorsed Bush.

I don't see it as out of step for them or that it will be controversial.

7. Salt Lake Tribune has never endorsed a Democrat? I find that very hard to believe
The "Trib" as we call it here was started by the Catholic Kearns family when Tom Kearns wanted to run for Senate and couldn't get any good press out of the Mormon owned/run Deseret News.

Until very recently it was run by the same Catholic family/group. Until it was recently purchased, the previous group, in the line of the Kearns family, the Gallivans, were Catholic, very liberal and VERY democratic.

And Salt Lake is pretty reliably Dem. Our current mayor is a dem and our last mayor, Ross Anderson, was a godless commie pinko (in dems clothing, our current one prolly is too, truth be known).

The paper endorsed Bush in 2004 but the majority of the editorial board was very much against the decision. The newish owners over ruled them. It was VERY controversial here.

I can't find it on a google search but if I had to guess, the Trib has endorsed dems for prez before.

That said, the Mormon church will endorse McCain (if it could and still be tax exempt) in a million little ways its will will be made known and McCain will win big here because of it.

But the Trib is NOT the church and until very recently was not republican.

9. Amazing.
Of course, the Trib is the "liberal" paper here in Utah, so most of the conservative Mormon population won't pay the least bit of attention. They all get the Deseret News (which is owned by the LDS church). Still... It feels nice.

Also, the Cleveland Plain Dealer endorsed Obama today. http://blog.cleveland.com/pdopinion/2008/10/obama_for_president.html
