So...Palin on SNL. Discuss.

Do we care? Will it help or hurt anyone?
I was ready to write a scathing letter to SNL & NBC today telling them that having her on was an endorsement of the racism, violence and hatred that she embraces. But then I thought I should see the show first.

Any thoughts?

1. i don't have problem, it's not an endorsement of her but it would be nice for
Biden to also appear. I also won't be awake to see it.

4. That's really my main problem with it and I probaby should have said so in the OP.
If they'd ever invited Biden or Obama to appear, then it would be a very different thing. But so far all they've done is invite Obama's opponent: first Clinton, now Palin.

But...as someone else did point out elsewhere in the thread, they did invite him but it was the weekend of Hurricane Gustav and he cancelled. I forgot about that.

actually, they did invite Obama to appear
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 03:03 PM by fishwax
Obama was scheduled to appear earlier this year, but it was the weekend that Hurricane Gustav was about to hit, and so he decided it would not be a good time.

I think he still appeared, but to request donations for hurricane relief, rather than in a skit. I could be wrong, though.

Library murders. The reason I'm reading it is because I'm of Lithuanian heritage and so is the main character - Miss Zukas. Not many books in English with Lithuanian characters in them.

I'm also really enjoying the Aunt Dimity series because it's not what I thought it would be. And the series that got me started on cozies is the Agatha Raisin series. She's the protagonist you love to hate.

25. Haven't watched the damn show since the original writers and
actors left post-Reagan. They occasionally can still inspire moments of brilliance (church lady, anyone?), but are pretty much too busy trying to wring ratings out of a basically ignorant college/frat crowd (three stooges on coke, anybody?) to really do anything original. Fuck them and their ratings, I hope Palin puts them in the same league as 'sermonette' with this idiocy.

If they attempt to tell me what happened I will say I am not interested. I do not want to give a theocratic fascist any more attention than they should have. I wrote to SNL and expressed those very feelings. If viewership is down it will make a statement.
If viewership is not down then I will be a unique person. I will feel the American patriotism inwardly that I have and will never give fascism any attention whatsoever. My blood relatives fought and died to vanquish fascism from the face of the earth!
Palin is an ignorant fascist in lipstick that should never be allowed to participate in a free republic's political process.
She endorses an ideology that condones indiscriminate killing of innocent people. Republicans think death is the cure for everything.

29. I vote for the letter
Sarah Palin - aside from being obviously and totally unqualified to be a dog-catcher let alone Vice-President to a 72 year old, unhealthy, front-runner - is actively involved in a secessionist organization, has been found to have violated state ethics regulations, and has stood for the ultra-right wing of the Republican party.
This is simply not a person that should be given any consideration at all from the media (whom she avoids like the plague, btw) as a legitimate candidate.
Frankly, I don't care what SNL has in store for her tonight. This is a free campaign stop for her in the latest Republican campaign tactic - the friendly, charming ones.
SNL has found some new traction this campaign as a relevant TV program. This stunt kills of all that.
Make no mistake about this: Palin is a very dangerous anti-American zealot. She has about as much regard for our constitution and our democracy as she has for her opponents. The McCain camp has repeatedly tried to paint Barack Obama as some kind of secret usurper to all things American; the real enemy is their own VP candidate. Boycott the show.

She is no longer amusing. She has been found to be corrupt & inept as a Gov. Her stands on issues are repugnant. The US Corp Media has not educated the public about her views on issues that need exposure for the American voters. 45. Apparently she hasn't even seen the script yet.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 03:21 PM by deadparrot
The Republican vice presidential candidate, who has been portrayed on SNL by show alum Tina Fey over the past month, told the press on Friday that she was appearing on the show this weekend but had yet to see any pages of the script. NBC wouldn't even confirm that she would be on the show.

...

Usually, guests on "Saturday Night Live" participate in script discussions throughout the week prior to their appearance, and also take part in run-throughs or rehearsal prior to Friday night. But Palin is known to be especially adept with teleprompters and cue cards, so she needn't be bothered with full memorization of her script like other cast members who often have long stretches of dialogue to deliver.

For what I'm thinking about her and John McCain about now, I might as well self delete.

But then I'm even angrier with our country and our media and our boards of elections.

As well as we are doing, we may lose. Who knows, maybe we'll probably lose given how little is being done to fix our voting system.

Apparently, it's largely left to the states to ensure that every vote counts, but every fucking year some state fucks it all up.

Fuck it, fuck Sarah Palin and Fuck John McCain and Saturday Fucking Night Live, fuck all of them too.

58. I'm absolutely watching it...
So far, SNL has been pretty favorable to Obama.. mostly because Palin has done such a good job at burying herself, but Fey has been allowed to portray Palin to a "T", and that has helped show how idiotic Palin is.

I'm fine with them letting her show up to "defend" herself, or however they phrase it. And, I have a feeling Biden will be on in the next week or two as well if the Obama camp wants him to be there.

So nope, i'm not boycotting it or vetoing it only to watch every single clip on YouTube ad nasuium... i'll give SNL the ad credit for it.. because frankly - I feel that they've earned it. And, i'm hopeful that they'll bury her even more, and she won't realize it until it's too late. ;)

62. I don't care if she makes an appearance.
Originally I had heard she was hosting the show and that I would have cared about. That is a position of honor she does not deserve.

But making an appearance? Who cares. Most of the other candidates have done so. But SNL should tread carefully to make sure they do nothing that even begins to be interpreted that they legitimize the hate speech spewing from her, her supporters and the McCain surrogates. I doubt that will be an issue though.

68. Proof that SNL treated Palin with kid gloves, and helped rather than hurt her.
The Freepers are bragging about how funny it was. If it were actually cutting humor they would be writing letters and making death threats.

69. Unfortunately, I thought she did alright. Not great or anything, but it was ok.
I enjoyed it. She was not hard to watch. They goofed on her pretty heavy and she seemed to take it in good humor. I'm not sure what to make of it at this point. I don't think the appearance will hurt her poll numbers. Hopefully it won't help.

70. I think she did herself a favor
Not McCain necessarily, but she looked much more approachable than in the past.

Yes, the show (especially Amy Poehler's rap) was anti-McCain, but Palin herself was a good actress and a good sport. Anyone who listened to the words of the skits and of the rap song would think "snap! they did NOT just say that," but as we all know to our sorrow, words in politics don't matter as much as the way you say them. And she looked good. She did. If she were someone I liked, I would have said she rocked. But even though I don't like her, I have to say that she did very well and scored a lot of likeability points.

I doubt that, at this stage of the campaign, it'll make any difference--it's sort of like her debate performance. She had to not suck, and she did not suck. In fact, she did a lot better than I expected. She did nothing substantive other than look human... but she looked human. And from where I'm sitting, that was an improvement upon the impression I had yesterday. In fact, after about a trillion zillion appearances like this one, I might even consider liking her.

72. I don't think liking her is beneficial to the country
As I said in my letter to NBC, SNL USED to be fun to watch, now it's as bad as the worst show on television, and even though Tina Fey has been a bright spot for them, Palin hasn't improved the show one iota. Having Moose Woman on just made them closer to Hannity and Colmes in concept, nothing more. Sacrificing integrity for a quick ratings boost is as bad as putting a band aid on a gaping wound, and SNL is a gaping wound. Maybe it's time for Loren Michaels to find something else to do.

animals from the air cavorting around on a comedy show. :puke:

73. I thought Sarah Palin's performance was actually decent.

I felt the character of Amy Poehler really just topped everything, so Palin was thrown to nothingness. I'm unimpressed by her and her words are evil but she wasn't bad on the show. I noted that manuy people said she was uncomfortable throughout the episode. I disagree, I think she did get a bit more uncomfortable towards the end of the wrap when they sort of brought that moose in, because in the wrap they called her evil or something to that affect.

Other than that, she seemed fine and I don't know what the negativity towards her was about. Her being on SNL won't endear her to anyone, so it's neither here nor there. I dislike the woman for her actions on the ground, but I also realize she's extremely ambitious and it's that ambition that drives her to incredibly outlandish despicable acts. On SNL she seemed final, except possibly towards the end.
