Tinklenberg campaign to release “overwhelming” donation numbers today
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 01:22 PM by kineta
Update: The campaign now says it’ll release 24-hour fundraising numbers at 3:05 pm today on Daily Kos and the Huffington Post. His Act Blue donations are now approaching $170,000, raised since yesterday.

Democrat El Tinklenberg’s campaign has received an “overwhelming” amount of contributions since his Republican opponent, Rep. Michele Bachmann, told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that she believed the media should investigate whether members of Congress are “anti-American.” But, as the money’s coming in so quickly, the campaign can’t yet give firm numbers.

Tinklenberg’s communications director, Kate Munson, told MnIndy that online support has been strong, and that donations coming through Act Blue — $128,000 currently, coming from more than 3,000 supporters — has been one of many ways the campaign has been accepting funds. She wouldn’t give an estimate for direct donations to Tinklenberg08.com. “We’ve had an overwhelming amount of online support,” she says. “We’re still counting so it’s impossilbe to give an accurate estimate.” She says the campaign will make an announcement of the figure Monday morning.

1. Check out the comments section of this article

Oops, they did it again.

"Nancy Pfotenhauer, the official spokeswoman for the McCain campaign just gave a live interview on MSNBC where she said that “real Virginians” were voting for John McCain, and the Obama supporters were “people who’d moved in to North Virginia from D.C. in droves.”

The commentator called her on the “real Virginians support McCain” remark and she got all flustered. I’m sure you can find either a transcript or a clip.

This stuff needs to get out there.

I’m sure Virginians for Obama will be surprised that the GOP doesn’t consider them “real” citizens of their state.

Why do Republicans continue to insist that only “they” are patriotic? They’re opening up a very dangerous genie that is going to be impossible to put back into the bottle after the election. They’ve created the biggest divide in America since the civil war."

3. tsk, tsk, Nancy Fluffernutter.
I guess she didn't learn from Michelle Bachmann.

Really, a comment like that from an Obama spokesman would warrant a firing. But McCain will probably promote her.

6. Nancy Pfotenhauer is the best at political spin on either side
McCain can't afford to lose her. He'd have to put people like Rick Davis and Tucker Bounds on TV more often. I hope that the Obama campaign forces McCain to remove her though. Just like with Phil Gramm and Carly Fiorina and McCain's economic direction has really tanked since then.

9. She was McCain's best economic surrogate too
Obama had been pounding McCain non-stop on tax breaks that ship jobs overseas. Carly Fiorina was the one who gave him the talking point about America having a high corporate tax rate (of course leaving out that 2/3s of companies don't pay taxes because of so many tax loopholes). I'm really looking forward to Tucker Bounds and Rick Davis having to up their TV appearances.

7. I loved this comment about Michele McCarthy's return to Congress:
<i>"her colleagues on either side of the aisle will treat her like an Ebola virus"</i>

One hopes her return will indeed be that nasty and, of course, short-lived.

13. After she defined "real Virginians" and said "wink, wink, you know what I mean"
the MSNBC guy (who wasn't smiling) said something like, we'll just let your remarks stand like you said them. For half a second Pfotenhauer almost looked embarrassed - she wanted agreement and didn't get it.

4. Slipping Away For Good

With the changing demographics of the country, the wingnuts are a severely endangered species. Texas blue by 2020? 2016? They know their plight and they're acting like it.

5. I hope he raises over a million dollars by monday.
That will show the rightwingnuts something.

Before this weekend I think Tinklenberg had about a quarter of the cash that Bachman has. Hope this evens the playing field.

11. CBS News reporting on the Tinklenberg money bomb

(...)

"I can absolutely confirm that we have had in the last 24 hours donations from hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the country," said Tinklenberg campaign manager Anna Richey. "It's coming in so fast I can't get a hold on it and can't give a precise number. It's still coming in." At minimum, she said, $150,000 has so far been donated and she expects the total, which the campaign will release later today, to be far higher.

"It's overwhelming," said Richey. "I've gotten 600 e-mail messages into our info e-mail account in the last 12 hours. People are outraged." She said a number of the e-mails decried Bachmann's call for the investigation as modern-day McCarthyism. "People shared personal stories of how their parents were discriminated against" during that time, said Richey.

The messaes, she said, came from "Republicans, Democrats, people who professed to be out of work and struggling economically but wanted to give what they could."

16. The article says it will be released on Kos and Huffington post
there have been some news articles trickling in though, so I'd bet that they'll at least do a press release on Monday.

Looks like Tinklenberg created a diary on Kos last night to thank people: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/18/2550/3286/381/634245
