Can we all organize a cancel Cable day?
Let's do it in mass numbers on the same day.

The only way to fight back at the "Corporate Media" is to hit them in their pockets.

If someone would create a web page asking everyone to cancel cable for one month they would hear us. Can you imagine if 1 million people canceled cable all on the same day? It would let them know that we are not going to take their lies anymore.

We have the Internet and books can be taken out at the library.

We have to take back our country. Let's get something going!

9. Replace it with Netflix. Netflix is not owned by a major media company.
Give them money and you're decentralizing cultural power, and you're in more control over your own time, which empowers you.

Very early musicals from 1929/1930. TW only puts out DVDs of the films it thinks it will sell, mostly '40s/'50s/'60s stuff. Those of us into silent or pre-code are often left out in the cold.

Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 03:56 PM by NYCGirl
Edited to add: I was a film major in college, but never paid that much attention to pre-code before. My favorite —and my specialty — is Film Noir (the real stuff, not "neo noir"), and TCM has some wonderful stuff in their library.

I had to cancel cable one time for financial reasons well they canceled me instead a few years back. I thought that I couldn't live without it but a few days later I felt better.

We need to ask everyone if they want to feed O'Reilly and Hannity or feed their families over the next 4 years.

5. I think this is a powerful idea.
I realize that all folks cannot cancel their cable, like those who access their internet via cable. However, many of us COULD afford to cancel for a month. I'm game. How do we go about getting this set up. I have satellite via Direct TV. A hit in the pocket book would make a big difference. Of course we would have to make sure that the powers that be know WHY we are doing this.

45. why avoiding one channel doesn't work
All you who are saying "I'll just boycott Fox; I need my other channels!":

Unless you're filling out a viewing diary for Neilsen or whatever, nobody knows whether or not you're boycotting a particular channel. Even if you don't watch Fox, they still get part of your cable bill. There's no magic box in your TV that sends Rupert Murdoch an angry e-mail every time you turn off Fux News in disgust.

This is why we need more freedom in choosing the channels we pay for. Imagine if you could say, "I only watch Comedy Central, CNN, and HBO, so I'd just like to pay for those, please." Instead, you have to pay for dozens of channels of crap, and a few that are outright trying to steal your money and give it to the wealthy.

57. Another idea
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 12:54 PM by RatTerrier
If any of you, by chance, get polled by Nielsen (TV ratings firm), tell them you're watching a personally acceptable channel or TV show. Don't tell them you watch CNN, FOX, etc. But pick some better channels or shows, even ones that you like.

Some examples:

NewsWorld International
The Daily Show
Real Time with Bill Maher
Keith Olberman
John McEnroe
Tavis Smiley
60 Minutes

Or any honest or left-leaning show you can think of. Or any of your favorite channels, even TMC, which was mentioned.

I don't know how Neilsen compiles their research anymore. I've heard they use telephone calls, diaries, and even set-top boxes. If you have a set-top box, put it on another TV, and tune it to the shows you like.

And, for the radio listeners: If you get asked to fill out an Arbitron diary, DO NOT ever tell them you listen to RW talk radio! If you have AAR in your market, listen to it and write it down. If you have Ed Schultz or any left-leaning shows in your market, listen to it and write it down. If not, listen to public radio (various NPR shows, college stations, Pacifica) and write it down. If, by chance, you feel the need to tune in just to hear what Rush has to say, then don't write it down. They don't need to know. If you record in your diary that you tuned in to a RW show for even a few minutes, guess what? You're donating to Rush's pill and trophy wife fund!

TV and radio rely on ratings surveys to set their ad rates. If it shows that not as many people are receptive to seeing or hearing RW propaganda, then this could show in the ratings.

62. How about the ones with the Nielsen boxes?
Your right we shouldn't tell them that we watch any of the shows.

64. Like I said
If possible, put the Nielsen box on a second TV.

Or, put it on your main one and don't watch CNN or FOX.

69. I like the idea of a "Turn off cable news" site.
Keep the cable, just let the sponsors of CNN and Faux know no one is watching their putred shows.

70. If there is election fraud on November 2nd my suggestion would be
to have Move On set it up to cancel our subscriptions On November 3rd!
It would be great if Move On could do a letter and have subscribers sign it that if the media helps with the election fraud they are warned as to what is going to happen. I guarantee the media would straighten up and fly right if we did this.

81. September 11'th
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 05:54 PM by Bushneedstogo
The cable news is going to give Bush another free convention because they will make 9/11 his day.

I know that it's soon but If we could get thousands they might get the message loud and clear.

Bush was not the hero on 9/11 the people were and that day should be there's.

I need help organizing this.

We make two statements at once.

The 11'th isn't Bush the fake Hero's day and second we are not going to stand for one sided news any longer.

76. Cancelling cable would actually COST me $$$
When Comcast took over ATTBI, they set up an illegal tying contract, whereby they would raise my broadband rates if I didn't subscribe to their cable service... A blatant vioaltion of the Clayton Anti-Trust act, toi be sure, but Oregon's toothless PUC refused to do anything about it. So it would cost me about $10 per month not to have it- which sucks, because I've programmed most of the garbage channels off off the TV anyway.

78. If you want to hit Cable News, boycott the advertisers and let them know.
They perk up for that sort of thing. Look what happen to Whoopi! If businesses are get scared, they'll let the cable news know.

82. That's not going to do because they will get more advertisers
We have to make a statement and I think that it should be on Sept. 11'th.
