Oct. 18--The contest for a seat in the U.S. Senate from Georgia is unexpectedly close this year, with Democrat Jim Martin polling nearly even with Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss.
Once written off by Democrats as an easy win for Chambliss, the race is now considered a toss-up. That created enough hope for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to spend more than $500,000 this past week on advertising for Martin.
Chambliss released two ads attacking Martin and Democrats on Wednesday, saying that Martin can't be trusted. In turn, Martin released a new ad criticizing Chambliss' support of the financial bailout bill and blaming his support of deregulation for causing the crisis.
After a bruising Democratic primary this summer, it appeared that Martin, with just $56,000 on hand, had a mountain to climb to beat Chambliss, who had more than $4 million in the bank. But money has been flowing rampantly on both sides since then and Martin's poll numbers have climbed up and up.
In a Survey USA poll taken over the past weekend, Chambliss led Martin 46 percent to 43 percent and an InsiderAdvantage poll the previous week put the candidates in a tie with 45 percent each. Libertarian Allen Buckley is also running for the seat, and gets a very small percentage of support in polls.
In Glynn County, Chambliss is by far the most popular candidate, judging from contributions to his campaign. Chambliss has gotten more than $23,000 in donations from Glynn County residents for this election cycle and Martin, none. But the last finance reports the candidates filed was in July, so donations in recent months aren't yet publicly available.
