. . .on MSNBC and the anchor called her on it, gave her a chance to clarify and she didn't. Then he told her she would own that. LOL

He said "Nancy...I'm just going to...give you a chance to come down from the ledge here...did you just say "real" Virginia"? And she was like "Well, real virginia! Meaning" (not clarifying)...you could see Kjevin's reaction afterwards and he said "Ok...heh...just letting you know about that one", while shaking his head.

23. So McCain is in Woodbridge, VA and his spokesperson is saying that
isn't "real" Virginia? My famiy and I are amazed to hear that. I was born and raised in Woodbridge and that is where my parents still live. My father, born in Rugby, VA, deep in the heart of Appalachia, is no longer a Virginian, because he lives in Woodbridge? Not only lives there, but is one of the most well known citizens of the area, complete with having a school named after him?

Stupid cow! I'm incensed.

Oh, and my parents are Obama supporters, so the insult is actually lost on them, because they weren't voting for those jackasses anyway.

In the early '70s my mother came up with this slogan and the Mount Vernon Ladies Democratic Club (yes, that's really what it was called!) printed them up. Members of the General Assembly loved to bash Northern VA....

Pfotenhauer: (Discussing Virginia and their need to win it and the fact that she is from Northern Virginia) - "Well, Kevin, I certainly agree that Northern Virginia has gone more Democratic and as a proud resident of Oakton, Virginia, I can tell you that the Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia and moved into Northern Virginia and that's really what you see there but the rest of the state - REAL VIRGINIA, if you will - I think will be very responsive to Senator McCain's message and remember that, you know, you've got places in other states like Northern Wisconsin and the Iron Range of Minnesota, uh, South Central and South Eastern Pennsylvania, um, the St. Louis suburbs and the rural areas of Missouri that are responsive to, to our message. And, again, we're taking it to 'em in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. He's having to fight to defend there, as you can tell, he's having to deploy people like the Clintons in Pennsylvania and every speech Joe Biden gives, he says "I'm from Scranton." You don't know what else he's going to say but he sure gets that line in.

Kevin: Hey, Nancy, I'm going to give you a chance to climb back off that ledge. Did you say "REAL VIRGINIA?"

Pfotenhauer: Hah Hah! I did say outside of North (garble), I mean REAL VIRGINIA because north Virginia is where I've always been. REAL VIRGINIA I take to be the, the, the, this part of the state that is more SOUTHERN in nature, if you will. Northern Virginia is really metro D.C. as you're aware, Kevin.

(Silence for a moment)

Kevin: Alright, I'm, I'm just gonna let you wear that one. I'm just saying....

Topic moves on with Pfotenhauer forced smiling...

Kevin totally got that it was a fuck up, and said "That's going to be a tough one on Monday morning", after the interview. We should let the Obama campaign know. Someone on general discussion said that an anchor (not sure if it was him or Shuster on now) referred back to it later , mocking "McCain is having a rally now in...'REAL Virginia'.."

You've got your Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell types, your NRA members, your inbred white trash racists, your full out capitalists, your airy fairy new agers, your old money upper crust who think that Virginia is the center of the universe, your run of the mill republicans and democrats...and your blue Northern Virginia...also known as The People's Republic of Alexandria.

29. OK, I have a question
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 01:15 PM by kwolf68
I live in Fauquier County (which i am assuming based on her standards is 'real Virginia'). I live here and am VERY Liberal and WILL VOTE for Barack Obama as are many other people here (maybe not a majority, but more than just a few of us).

So am I a real Virginian simply because I live in a pre-ordained 'real Virginia area' even though I will vote for Obama?

Someone help me out of this conundrum.

34. Depends on where in Fauquier you live. If you live in Warrenton, you may
very well not be a real Virginian. You're becoming part of the stretch down from Gainesville.

On the other hand, I lived up in Marshall before moving out here, and by God, that was "real Virginia". :sarcasm:

I know this because Marshall was one of the last places in this country where a restaurant owner was criminally charged for refusing to serve blacks. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C03EED71338F93BA25751C1A962948260

39. Yup. I moved to Marshall in 1982 and didn't know the "story" behind
that restaurant when I first moved there...just heard in town that they had the world's best chili. Went there to try it and they surely did. But that was the one and only time I set foot in that place, once I learned about it. The feds coming in and cleaning it out really lit up our little town. And the restaurant never recovered and closed down soon thereafter.

I'm from Fairfax County (the heart of Northern VA), and it is true that Northern Virginia is nothing like the rest of Virginia. It is sorta untactful for a campaign operative to say that though. Its needlessly divisive.
