ROLLING STONE: It's Already Stolen

http://www.gregpalast.com/rolling-stone-its-already-stolen/

Don’t worry about Mickey Mouse or ACORN stealing the election. According to an investigative report out today in Rolling Stone magazine, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Greg Palast, after a year-long investigation, reveal a systematic program of "GOP vote tampering" on a massive scale.

- Republican Secretaries of State of swing-state Colorado have quietly purged one in six names from their voter rolls.

Over several months, the GOP politicos in Colorado stonewalled every attempt by Rolling Stone to get an answer to the massive purge - ten times the average state's rate of removal.

- While Obama dreams of riding to the White House on a wave of new voters, more then 2.7 million have had their registrations REJECTED under new procedures signed into law by George Bush.
Kennedy, a voting rights lawyer, charges this is a resurgence of 'Jim Crow' tactics to wrongly block Black and Hispanic voters.

- A fired US prosecutor levels new charges - accusing leaders of his own party, Republicans, with criminal acts in an attempt to block legal voters as "fraudulent."

- Digging through government records, the Kennedy-Palast team discovered that, in 2004, a GOP scheme called "caging” ultimately took away the rights of 1.1 million voters. The Rolling Stone duo predict that, this November 4, it will be far worse.

There's more:

-snip-

Note - Kennedy and Palast are releasing, simultaneously with the Rolling Stone investigative report what they call, the vote-theft 'antidote': a 24-page full-color comic book, Steal Back Your Vote, which can be downloaded or obtained in print from their non-partisan website, StealBackYourVote.org

For updates and video reports, go to RollingStone.com, www.GregPalast.com and StealBackYourVote.org.

with my sister and nephew. God help them if they do. You think the Republicans are ugly right now? They steal this, and I'll consider Republicans enemies of The Constitution. I took an oath to defend it, and I WILL.

4. So Tired of This Garbage

I don't mind those who caution against election-stealing on DU. After all, 2000 was obviously stolen, and there seems to be considerable evidence that 2004 was as well, even if the case isn't as open-and-shut as it is with regard to 2000.

However, how do you write an article, just before election day, or contribute to it, and allow it to be titled "It's Already Stolen"? That implies that it's a done deal, McCone is going to win, and we may as well just grin and bear it.

Isn't the point of these articles to raise awareness and prevent complacency and frustrate the activities of the thieves? Assuming so, I cannot think of any less effective manner in which to get your point across than to don some mantle of high-handed condescension and preach about the inevitability of the evil in question. More than one person is going to hear about that article and decide not to vote because of it. And isn't that sort of ironic?

Slightly off-topic: this reminds me of when the ridiculous, Clarence Thomas-enabling Sam Nunn was trying to remain relevant in his waning years in the Senate, and after retiring, as the chieftain of some goofy think-tank. His specialty was WMDs in the hands of terrorists, and he would tell us regularly, in ominous tones, that a CBW attack in the U.S. was "inevitable," and "not a question of if, but when." I doubt I was the only one who tuned out his message, and while I and others did so because he was probably wrong (and knock on wood about that), I'm sure many others did so because they were all, "Sam, if it's inevitable, I'm just not going to worry about it, because there's nothing I can do about it."

The threat of election theft is real, and should be taken seriously. The messengers, however, really, really, really need some PR advisors. It's not "already stolen" by a long shot.

6. Well said.
In their desire to sell magazines, they are contributing to the problem with articles like that. It is especially dispiriting to see this in Rolling Stone, with it's largely young readership. The last thing we need is anything that discourages young people from voting.

9. Thanks. And Good Point . . .

. . . about Rolling Stone's young readership. I hadn't even thought of that, but now that you raise it, I'm even madder about this asinine article. And how could RFK Jr. and Palast allow themselves to be associated with such a piece??? Astounding.

7. I'm getting to the point where I don't trust Palast.
Seems to me he is always stirring up shit before an election. I wonder what his REAL motives are?

12. I See Your Point

I don't think any ill of him as far as harboring ulterior motives . . . but I do question his wisdom, and the fact that he has become a complete one-note Johnny on this topic. He may be losing the forest for the trees.

(Reminds me of Glenn Greenwald during the FISA episode this summer, when he was apparently unable to sleep or consume food.)

22. Right You Are

Especially when the title of the article essentially implies that there's no point in voting. Um?? Hello?

Weird.

19. I also hate the title of the article. Not sure why they do that.
Maybe Greg Palast thinks that will get people mad enough to make sure to vote, but it may depress others into thinking their vote won't matter.

We need tons of people to vote to overwhelm the cheating and still win.

www.stealbackyourvote.com

and for friends who think it never happened, there's a calm (not hyperdrama) documentary about the various methods Republicans have used in recent elections, and some historical info too.

www.stealingamericathemovie.com Stealing America: Vote by Vote DVD is very reasonable.

5. If it is stolen
I have absolutely no faith that the Democrats in Government will do one damn thing to stop it. They didn't in 2000, they didn't in 2004 and they won't now.
And most Americans will live with it. The prospect that they are actually living under a coup is beyond what they can accept.

8. if they steal the election, marching in the streets will be the first impulse.
but that won't do anything but get a lot of good people thrown in jail and on terror watch lists.

i would submit that there are many, many other ways to subvert a mccain/palin administration.

however, the brighter the light on their efforts before the election takes place, the greater the chances they can't steal it.

15. Steal Back Your Vote dot com -- site established by Greg and RFK Jr
Here's a website to help us do our best to get our votes counted.

We need MASSIVE NUMBERS to turn out to overcome the usual Republican voter suppression.

Some of the methods to reduce Democratic turnout have been caught and stopped, but there will still be others in place, so we need an avalanche to get our landslide.
