Am I the only one losing sleep over the elections?
Guys (and gals), I hate these Republicans so much, I hate everything about them, their lies, their dirty tricks, their insults to our intelligence and to the character of our candidates, and I am so hopeful about Obama that I am actually losing sleep over this.

It looks like I am going to stress myself out completely until November 4th.

Am I the only one losing sleep over this?

14. That deserves its own thread!
It is precisely this kind of crap that turned Ohio red in 2004.

16. I know I lived there. I volunteered and took the day off to vote and canvass.

My wife and i spent most of our day standing in line to vote in Franklin county. Yet my friends who lived in the suburbs all went in and out given that they had a shitload of machines for a small suburban population.

2. Advice to both of you: Turn off your computer and either
go take a nap, or get out on the streets and work for Obama.

These threads are nothing less than tedious and insulting to fellow posters.

We all are wanting a win, but complaining on a DU board about Republicans does us no good.

3. How is this tedious and insulting?
I'm sick and tired of these guys and upset at what I see coming from the other side.

8. I don't agree that it's tedious and insulting.
If anything, DU is a good place to get support and feel better.

7. My advice to you is to not read these threads if you find them so insulting.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 10:18 AM by Guy Whitey Corngood
Being anxious or nervous over such an important election has nothing to do with what we do or don't do for the campaign. Some of us can walk and chew gum at the same time. Let me add that condescension doesn't help either. This is a message board where people come together to talk about a variety of subjects. Some of us being worried after 2 stolen elections doesn't impact the campaign one way or another. I find it ironic that you posted to complain about the OP and lecture people about posting and "complaining" on DU.

12. Being a little bit more understanding would be more productive.
I'm sure you're mostly speaking for yourself when you say these thoughts are tedious and insulting. In fact, DU'ers should be able to express their deeply felt sadnesses without fellow posters reprimanding them for it. Taking a nap and/or getting out on the streets to help Obama are definitely great things to do but not enough to erase what are very profound and unshakeable feelings.
So I would urge anyone to express whatever they damn well please. Because chances are, there are many that feel exactly as you do and it is healthy to be able to express those feelings.
See, I feel better already.

4. No, you're not the only one.
In fact, you know the feeling you get when "they" do another something to America that is really appalling? It feels like someone just stabbed you? Well, lately I'm getting that feeling on a constant basis. It's like the knife doesn't get taken out. The feeling lingers and I go around all day hurting. My eyes get all watery when I look at Obama and at all the hopeful faces. I get choked up a lot. When I start thinking about how many people are hurting in our country.
I am so deathly afraid of "them" winning. I really don't think I could live with that. I think this more than anything keeps me awake at night.

6. Back when McCain first picked Palin,
I was a bit worried. I finally took a bit of a computer and news break for a while, and just talked to some Obama supporting friends, volunteered to do stuff around here, and felt better.

Hang in there, it's almost over.

10. I lost sleep the night Palin gave her evil speech at the RNC. But I sleep well now.
especially since Obama and Biden have won every debate and the polls seem stable for Obama.

The suspense is killing me!

Will this country be finally coming to its senses, or will it vote in four more years of insanity!

21. What you need is temporary contingency plan
I'm a worrier by nature. There was a time when this election would have had me within a hair of stroking out. As it is, I still feel a certain amount of anger and anxiety, but I've learned how to keep the worst of it at bay.

It's all about the temporary contingency plan. Ask yourself, "What will I do in the immediate period after 11/5 if McCain wins, either legitimately or by fraud?" The answer doesn't even have to be a particularly good one. You just need a plan that gives you some direction on 11/5. For instance, my plan is to spend one month completely oblivious to politics. No newspapers, no TV news, no checking rss feeds. I'll teach the beagle something, work on the family tapestry, watch some of the dozens of movies I've recorded and didn't have time to watch, remove the hideous carpet from my office. After the month is over, I'll reassess my political involvement and decide where to put my energy. It's not a great plan, not a complete plan, and probably not the plan that will work for you. Maybe you need to dig in deeper, get MORE involved in local or national politics, take a trip, write a book, whatever. But you might be amazed how effective it is just to have SOME kind of plan.

Now, this may sound defeatist to some - as though I'm so lacking in confidence in Obama that I'm pre-addressing his 2009 Christmas card to Chicago - but it's actually critical to working toward a win. There are only 17 days left. Every day must be maximized. There is no time for the distractions and disorganization that come from getting too little sleep and spending 75% of my energy on worrying. I have a plan for the worst. I know what I'm going to do. So now I don't have to think about it and I can spend my time more productively .

23. That and if one is able, give some money to the campaign.
I've never in my entire life given money to any politician. This was my first time and it made me feel damn good.

24. Sometimes, but not because I fear Obama losing
I'm watching and reading more about politics because of the elections. Sometimes a topic will get my mind going and I will have a hard time sleeping. For example, last night on Bill Maher's show, he and the guests were talking about how McCain was/is a good guy. Ben Affleck started talking about how you can't blame McCain/Palin for one or two nuts that come to their events. My head wanted to explode. Yes, McCain/Palin are to blame....they call Obama a terrorist every day!! Plus, it's not just one or two nuts....anyone who has seen the youtube videos has seen person after person calling Obama a terrorist. It was annoying me that Bill Maher and his guests seemed to be going easy on the terrorist stuff so I kept thinking about it last night. These are the types of things that keep me up....not the fear of losing the election.

25. Not only am I losing sleep- my work is suffering
I spend way too much time on the internet at work instead of actually working. I am getting my work done, I'm just not doing the 'catch-up' stuff I need to do.

I'm also not as in touch with friends like I usually am.

17 more days...
