As right-wing bellicosity of many kinds grows steadily worse, one wonders where it's leading. The thug right's hatred -- of not just Obama but us as well -- is evident. Rush and his ilk have sown the seeds of nightmares for decades. And we know for certain that the thug right is armed to the teeth.
I usually find tin hattery -- conspiracy theorizing, extreme paranoia ... whatever -- to be really repugnant. At least a few threads of reason will remain to hold the social fabric together, I'm inclined to suppose. Now, though, as the economy continues to worsen, millions of increasingly desperate "low-information voters" will be increasingly vulnerable to the demagoguery of the Sarah Palins and Michelle Bachmanns of the world. It's easy to imagine pockets or regions fooling around, as times get increasingly tough, with various forms of neo-fascism. Consider the Klan between the wars -- especially in the in the 1920s. The KKK was then the main arbiter of what took place in virtually all spheres of life in many communities, counties and at least one state.
History is littered with examples of societies that went 'round the bend and did really bad things to one group or another, and one often wonders whether the targets of warped violence might have avoided problems if they'd exercised minimal foresight. For example, if you've been thinking about moving to a bluer locale, maybe there's no time like the present. We did, and we're much, much happier as a result. Life is soooo much better now that we're surrounded by, for the most part, passably sane people rather than by horrible, right-wing thugs. Other simple, reasonable precautions? If only on general principles, everyone should have a current passport. And it's always a good time to take rational, appropriate measures to secure your home, family and possessions.
It appears that the right-wing bellicosity is going to get get steadily worse and scarier for the next two weeks. But at the end of it all, maybe Obama will win big and the thug right will cooperatively and nonviolently accept the result. At the risk of seeming idiotically optimistic, I'll confess that despite everything, that's actually what I expect to happen.
But if things go in other directions, I intend to be as prepared as I reasonably can to take rational and appropriate countermeasures.
