Three thoughts to take with you into the next week
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 10:02 AM by WilliamPitt
1. We knew the media was going to be All George All The Time during and after the convention. We knew the polls were going to show a 'bounce,' whether real or imagined. Nothing about the lay of the land right now should come as a surprise to anyone.

2. Mike Dukakis was ahead by 15 points after his convention in 1988.

3. We have an axiom at truthout that is written in fire on the office walls: "When George W. Bush is flying high, when he has everything going his way, when he is on top of the world, he will say or do something to get the opposition back into the game."

Have a good week.

2. # 3 is a gem. That idiot's arrogance (when he THINKS he's on top)
WILL be his downfall.

4. I'd forgotten about #2.
Everybody needs to be reminded of it. Especially the Republicans. Thanks for pointing it out.

5. Thank you for these words of encouragement
I would also like to add one more: Don't believe or trust polls.

We've seen this week how the Time/CNN poll was skewed to favor the GOP. And I just learned today on another thread here that pollsters who use the telephone cannot access cell phones, only land lines; they are missing thousands of people, especially young people.

Finally, remember the wise words of Tip O'Neal-all politics is local.

Go out armed with facts and with the truth. Confront ignorance. You never know when what you say can change a mind-and a vote.

6. There IS no 11-13 point lead out there
No way no how. They polled while the convention was going on (no one watching mind you) and lots of people were leaving for the holiday weekend.

Just as with Kerry after the Dem convention the real results will come out in the polls in about a week from now, once people actually start paying attention.

The problem is that we are going to hear "Is the election already over?" crap drilled into people's heads.

58 days left. I still say it is Kerry- 47% is W's number period he can't improve on that and he HAS lost some of those already.

11. you make a very valid point
it took TWO weeks for them to prove or report there was a bounce..I think it will take just as long to tell the truth on the "no bounce" or small bounce that is really out there...Its so discouraging to listen to these yahoos count Kerry out...sure August was bad...we couldn't run ads, we let the sbv go on and on without lashing out...but its not over..and we got 60 days to kick his ass...we have NUMEROUS ways to tear bush down...the facts are on our side he just has to state them over and over and over again...repeat repeat repeat...

10. I prefer the idiot feels comfortable and safe, let him think he is ahead
because when they think they are losing, they are unpredictable and will pull evil, tragic tricks out of their hat.

This election is OURS to lose. We know the media will not report the truth and facts. Accept it, deal with it and take on the responsibilies that it entails. Canvas, spread the truth and campaign from home. We can't blame Kerry's campaign if we sit on are a**es and do nothing but whine.

12. what republicans do best
is nail their toes to the floor. They do it every time. I think it's inherent to being a republican--never know when to quit, when to stop, when enough is enough.

15. Other thoughts....
Keep your head up!
Most of these silly skewed polls are based on polling "likely voters".
"Likely voters" are defined as those who voted in the last election. Leaves alot of people out, doesn't it? Also, many people like myself have been going to "liberal laden" neighborhoods and festivals to sign up voters. I agree with a previous poster who argues that its better for us that they feel validated and secure that the numbers are on their side. On election day, many people will get a wake up call. I can't wait!!!!!!!!

16. welcome to DU
I'm going to fight hard, but I've always been a pessimist.

I've done more work for this election than every previous election combined - and I'm an ancient 37 years old.

18. I don't get the relevance of point 2?
Dukakis wasn't an incumbent. He was the Democratic nominee. He was tarred and feathered by the Repugs and he lost--in spite of his 15% one time lead.

Kerry isn't the incumbent. He's the Democratic nominee. He is being tarred and feathered by the Repugs, he doesn't even have a lead, much less 15 points, and ... well, you get the inference.

Are you comparing Bush*s lead to Dukakis'? If so, that's a very bad analogy.
