We think: Voters deserve better in the race for president

Perhaps this wish, coming a day before the last presidential debate and three weeks before the election, shows us to be "dangerous" and "out of touch."

"Dangerous" . . . as John McCain describes Barack Obama. And "out of touch," as Mr. Obama describes Mr. McCain.

But we wish Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama would approach the issues more and their campaigns' dark sides less.

Perhaps, practically speaking, the time for Mr. McCain to do that has run out. He's spent weeks impugning Mr. Obama's character and having surrogates call him "Barack Hussein Obama" at rallies. Mr. McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin, say Mr. Obama either "palled around with terrorists" or, "when convenient, he worked with terrorist Bill Ayers.

Most of their editorialists seem to favor Obama...
