When I called on Monday, it was very close between people who would vote for Tinklenberg and those who would vote for her. Tinklenberg by one according to that survey. (I didn't identify the campaign, but it might have come up on caller id.

When I doorknocked on Saturday. It was 11 to 6, with 11 for Tinklenberg and 6 who wouldn't say. None would admit being for Bachmann. Much the same the last time I doorknocked.

Bryan Kennedy tried twice and has now gone on to other things. There was a Democrat who started late this year and tried to get on the ballot with write-ins, but didn't get enough. There is also an independent who runs every time and does no campaigning.

But let's hold that thought and try next time if we have a candidate. It's a very tough district for Dems, especially with Sensenbrenner in office, but he can't last forever. There was a Republican professor running against him in this year's primary (!) who said he was told by Sensenbrenner's people that if he'd drop out this time they would help him in 2012 when S. retires. (He got about a third of the votes in the primary.)

It is a conservative leaning district.
The candidate who ran as a Dem, Patty Wetterling (someone whose son was kidnapped and never returned nearly 20 years ago) was well known for her child advocacy work, but she was not a great debater on other issues and was painted as left-wing, which would never work in this district.
There was a 3rd party candidate who was articulate and well-spoken.
The 3rd party and the Dem candidate had 49% of the vote combined and Michelle had 51%, so it was close.


FYI, El Tinklenberg is a moderate and thoughtful Dem. The Independent Party also endorsed El, so there is no 3rd party candidate with any constituency opposing him.

As a result,this is a tough but winnable race.
