Hanging effigies.

Racist stereotypes in political newsletters.

Racist jokes sent in emails.

Keep in mind, we've only begun this phase.

In the next 18 days, it will become even more openly racist. It will become even more vile. And there is the risk that it will become violent. The viscious racists are no longer afraid of keeping their vile nastiness secret.

Be vigilant, DUers. We're in for a tough ride during the end game.

I don't know what, but I have this feeling that something very bad is going to happen. So bad that I'm afraid their may not even be an election. The last time this feeling came over me, the phone rang and I found out that my father had died. I have that feeling again, but it i snot about me, it is about this election.

28. I know people who went to Mississippi during the worst of the Civil Rights era
to see that some form of justice prevailed.

Back then, the horror endured was far beyond breaking into offices, it was not effigies that were being hung, and the racial slurs were thick and heavy in every conversation. In some ways, it felt like this but times a million.

So many hateful people back then; a whole country that had for YEARS and YEARS been totally geared to not letting a black person drink from the faucet that a white could use or use the same toilet, or the same entrance door, or sleep in the same motel, or vote, or earn a living, or file a lawsuit, or not be treated like a former possession, or just live a god damned life in peace and enjoyment.

Not only is the harassment of these last few days before the election nothing like the horror of the Civil Rights era or the crap society we had before that; it is a triumph that a wonderful, smart and gracious black man is going to be the next President of the United States.

The way you fix that feeling of dread is to keep fighting for this victory UNTIL THE DEAL IS CLOSED. Like Obama has said repeatedly. Now is not the time to exhale, but to focus hard on the goal. This is what I am reminding myself when I have moments of feeling just like you described your feelings.

I acknowledge them, okay, maybe wallow in my fears a bit, then give myself a little history lesson, and push on. Don't let fear defeat you; use it to motivate yourself.

lives. Do they think we're not going to sit and fight to the death? What's the alternative? Living with their shit? Let them bring it on if they want violence. We don't seek violence. But some of us are very familiar with it. Enough said.

I knew it was coming too, but that doesn't make it any easier. It really feels like we're in a time warp headed straight back to 1861.

We have to follow Obama's example and keep calm, cool heads, but stay strong and steady.

It's always darkest before a new day. Making history isn't easy, but it will be more worthwhile than we can fully appreciate right now.
