Fuck Chris Matthews...what a terrible, terrible interview...
I simply can't believe Matthews had MN Rep. Michelle Bachmann on and let her spew her fucking lies for almost fifteen minutes. Even though to intelligent people, she came off as small, ignorant and a hate mongering asshole, she should not have been given fifteen fucking minutes to spew her crap.

Not only that, when an asshole like her is on, a counter balance should be present.

She had me seething and fucking Matthews played that robo call three fucking times!

I'm livid and will be sending off emails....

17. I don't get his point
He compared Bill Ayers to a clan member. Says there's no unAmericans in Congress. Says we can't associate with people like Bill Ayers. Yet doesn't know there's ex-clan member in congress. Pat's point is impossible to follow.

which I guess Pat would be for. When Pat gets ugly he shows how horrible a human being can be. Lesson from Pat, if you can help poor children take a pass if one of the many members of the charity has a pass you might now agree with. Pat the catholic that believes in Jesus forgiving all sins, apparently only believes this intermittently.

98. BINGO - I am not a Mathews fan, but you hit the nail on the head ...
I think Mathews in his bizarre way, was GENUINELY perplexed by what this lunatic was saying, and was in actual journalistic mode, and IMO, she came across as a complete and total freakshow.

The more that crackpot spewed the BETTER, it is RED MEAT for the 30 percent, but what I am seeing here is that these clowns are like flies to a flame ...

1) the more behind they get, the more desperate they get ...
2) the more desperate they get, the more they go back to the well that worked in 2000, 2002, 2004 - characer assassination and trying paint the D as unpatriotic ...
3) it fires up the "base" to no end ...
4) but, more and more, and more, it turns off the middle, and puts the Rs in an ever shrinking corner ...

114. I also agree.
He heard McCarthyism... and he probed... and rather than it just sounding that way... he just kept hearing more and more of it... so he kept asking questions just to see how fully she was embracing the ugliness.
It was a lot like interviews with Palin. "uh... what... how do You interpret the Bush Doctrine?" ...

It wasn't Mathews that was detestable... it was the answers he was getting, and any shortening of the interview would've been doing Bachman a favor.

He made her basically say liberal means unAmerican and there are members in Congress who are traitors and who should be investigated.

She came off looking a loon and only because Chris gave her the rope.

It was brilliant, mesmerizing television and raised a couple hundred thousand for her opponent.

He was playing out the hanging rope and the look of disgust on his face for that woman was priceless. Matthews did us all a great favor last night. He may have helped get this woman OUT of Congress.

I agree with everyone who said that having her on the show was the the right thing to do. If people don't see and hear these nutjobs, they don't know they're out there. They don't believe you when you tell them that these are the kinds of people running the Republican party. That female McCarthy being on Matthews' show exposed another nut to the world. Cheers for Matthews. I don't always agree with him, but he doesn't suffer fools lightly - of either party.

This is why we need to take heed, and thus action: Obama is right.
Two words: New Hampshire.

The crazies and uglies are going to come out en masse. They're desperate and unethical and they have zero consideration for fairness, propriety, honesty or rules at this point. They've proven they find threats to kill Obama do little but make them sneer, maybe giggle, and roll their eyes if/when they are cornered into saying it's a bad thing. It isn't harmless and it isn't a joke.

Imagine if some Dem Congress person got on and started spouting off the fringe beliefs that McCain was a traitor to his country and on and on.

Matthews would have intervened and pounded the person.

Her views were bullshit and should have been discounted right there and she should not have been unchallenged.

60. You know...I thought that was what he was doing in the first part of the interview...
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 07:00 PM by KoKo01
but when he kept on baiting her...getting her to call out liberals...going back to "McCarthy" type "Communist Stuff" ...I suddenly realized "Tweety got the Message from his Corporate Masters" and was allowing her to spew out the most filthy, biased, baiting diatribes I've seen in years on his show.

Then Tweety started to go after the Obama Op Spokesperson. (can't remember her name) who is always reasoned and measured in her statements and he went after her OVER AND OVER AND OVER ...baiting her until she finally got angry enough that she lost her earpiece and got rattled. She performed for Obama as a TROOPER...Tweety tried but he never got her to lose it.

In the end...Tweety was "working for "DA' MAN" while he promoted Repug Bachman's lies and tried to disrupt Obama Spokesperson who was sincere and honorable. Tweety went after the Obama Spokesperson in a way he'd NEVER touch Bachman...who is one of his Corporate Whore MASTERS.

Tweety works for the "DARK SIDE"...and the "DARK SIDE" is VERY GOOD at what they do. Just remember the DEVIL can "quote scripture, too, when it serves his purpose."

And a particularly weak and lame one too, I believe she was the one who was stuck saying "I think that's terribly demeaning to women" when Carville made some criticism of Palin that had nothing to do with her gender. She seems very mechanical reciting her talking points. She was yet again one of those surrogates who refused to answer the question of whether Palin was the most qualified woman or person for the VP position.

77. I would like to think that, but Hannity shows his "true colors" every day. And he's changed the race
This whole Bill Ayers nonsense had it's genesis on Hannity's radio show, and just grew and grew from there as Hannity repeated it endlessly. It eventually found its way to McCain's campaign advisers, and now it's infected the entire mainstream media and the political process. It's garbage, all this nonsense about "palling around with terrorists" and how Ayers and Obama were "friends", but in today's media age, it doesn't matter. Perception is reality, and the more media time you give these folks to regurgitate their lies, the more you legitimize them.

If you're going to have someone like Bachmann on, a rabid right-winger who will say anything, then you at least need to have the balance of a strong liberal advocate -- someone like Cenk Uygur, to pick a name -- who will defend against those attacks and give as good as they get. It's nice to think that Matthews was just "giving Bachmann the rope to hang herself with" as some here have said, but honestly, he's just giving Bachamann the rope she needs to hang our democracy with.

94. Really? I thought he did a great job. He didn't let her get away with general hate statements...
He called her on it, saying (I'm paraphrasing)...Senator, which of our Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress are you saying are anti-American?

Silence.

He repeats..."Senator, you just said that one of our U.S. Senators, Senator Obama, is anti-American and those like him and on the left are anti-American, so I'm asking...which other of our Senators and Representatives are you saying are anit-American? I mean, are all the ones on the left anti-American, just some of them, or which ones exactly?"

She spews some more generalities but doesn't back off her general hate statements.

He goes back to the main question at hand. Senator, you just accused a sitting U.S. Senator and others who think like him and on the left of being anti-American, so I'm asking.....

She didn't back off the talking points memo she'd rec'd earlier in the day, but judging from her frozen smile and inability to dance around his questions well, she will be more careful in her next interview, wherever it is. She'll probably stick to Fox.

Good going, Chris!

105. Actually it was probably good that he didn't interrupt
It was probably good that he let her go on and on like that for the simple fact of exposure.
I always say once you shine a light on something the object becomes clearer to all observers.

People are cagey with expressing these kinds of viewpoints and come up with all kinds of sly ways to get the message across. It lowers resistance to acceptance of the idea and wins more followers. Padded with the proper storefront you can get more people to subscribe to your ideology behind the curtain when you employ these methods.

But when it's naked and open people are either forced to agree or disagree. It's made more digital than analog. Binary. This is why racist John McCain supporters (or better phrased that unspecified percentage of McCain supporters who are racist) when confronted by a camera and asked to express their views, all of sudden get shy and inarticulate. They know that openly that view won't be supported which is why there is so much code. In order to win more supporters they have to present that storefront and get more shoppers into their ideology store bringing out what's behind the curtain gradually.

Some people are naïve and don't think this stuff really goes on that much anymore so it's best to give open mic to fools to show the reality. It's not to say everybody will be sharp enough to pick up on that reality but some will and it will alienate them. Perhaps they will begin to reflect on old commentaries from political adversaries accumulated over the years and say, "you know, maybe those people were right about these guys all along."

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let fools hang themselves with their own rope.
John Lucas

Those of us who suffer with her as our rep have tried to raise awareness and money for Tinklenberg for the last several months with modest success. Matthews' interview provided enough exposure to generate action from enough people to raise $70K for Tinklenberg today! And maybe more through the weekend. Also, surely Bachman spewed enough bizarreness and vile that can be useful for ads. Republicans in central Minnesota, by and large, are not the kind that want to "get" liberals, they're of the live & let live variety. Think Lake Wobegon. She does not *really* resemble them, and she sure doesn't appeal to the DFL and independent voters. Now is the time to get her out. We can do it.

It does not matter if the next 45 minutes were used to clean up her shit or not. She had 15 minutes of unchallenged time.

Matthews should have told her she was ignorant, full of shit and an embarrassment.

120. I sure hope so
I was so angry watching that hate filled bitch steam was coming out of my nose. I think my husband was a little worried about me, but he kept saying Matthews was doing a good job, I couldn't see it, my judgment was definitely skewed. Even Katrina Vanden Heuvel was livid. I can't remember when I've been this angry over an interview, what a horrible, horrible human being. I hope to God that appearance sinks her.

127. People like you should not assume the passions of others...or thoughts..
Guess where this harpy ran to next? Fox, CNN and other places....

He should have slammed her for her damned ignorance, but no, he let her go on and probably turn a few knuckle heads into some fantasy believers...

119. I was SO disappointed in him! Lately I've been warming to Matthews, but tonight he was awful.
I know that maybe he was trying to let her froth at the mouth to show what an ignorant asshole she was... but I was so upset that he REFUSED to correct her lies!! He told Buchanan that she had a "right to her opinion", but he should have challenged her on that Ayers bullshit. That is what they are going to hammer Obama with for the next two weeks.. create that fear, incite that racism and hatred, and that doubt.

A guy how owns an auto shop where we go our car fixed was saying they day after the debate that Obama made McCain look like he was "like 91 years old and very bad", but he couldn't vote for Obama because "no one knows anything about him!" WTF?? That is going to be their meme... "can you REALLY trust him?"

I have never hated the republicans more than I do right now. I though Bush and Cheney were filthy.. this crop is absolute pigs.

123. Michelle Bachman is the problem, not Tweety.
God, she is infuriating. I didn't think the pukes could find a shill who was hatter and wronger than Palin, but there she is.

UGGGGHHHH!!!!

124. Matthews was admirably restrained. Asked her some very pointed questions, but without histrionics,
that led her to say the media needs to look for un-Americans in Congress. His restraint reminded me of Biden's restraint in the VP debate. Not his nature, but exactly what the situation called for.

And Katrina was great, but she was unable to give a reason refuting Buchanan's comparison of the Weather Underground to the Klan. Matthews had the best answer I've heard on this kind of thing: one group had a good motive but the wrong means, the other group had both the wrong motive and the wrong means. It was one of Tweety's finest moments.

125. I don't understand why you think this is a bad thing. She needs to be exposed. She needs to seethe
on national television, and let everyone see what a rabid attack dog she is. She's full-blown batshit crazy, and all of us Minnesotans know it. I'm just happy that everyone could get a chance to see what we have to deal with!

This will be a game-changer for the Democratic candidate running against her this year!

126. For about the last time....
Yes, she needs to be exposed, but Matthews gave her fifteen minutes of unchallenged time to go on and on with her vile bullshit. He should have hammered her to her face, like he has done others who have spread vile junk against McCain (like questioning his war hero status).

Now, one good thing that I do see is coming from this is the huge outpouring of support for her opponent. So she may have just cut her own nose off in spite of her face.

I just don't think ANY person should be allowed to go out in public and make statements like she did without being confronted.

130. Are you serious? I think he did the interview well.
He let her ramble her craziness like a lunatic standing on a soap box. He made her stay on topic, so that she was able to completely express her insane thoughts about anti-American liberals. What did you want him to do, shut her up? That wouldn't have been a good interview.

Honestly, I think she made Chris Matthews tired. He looked like he was sick of her, and who wouldn't be!

which is up from about $2,500 at the start of the day.

135. Settle down on the Matthew stuff
Think about it logically.

He probably got taken to the woodshed for the Democratic Convention and his and Keith's perceived bias. He gets booted from the top chair and replaced by Gregory the tool.

If you watched him all week he pushed this same line of questioning on every McCain Surrogate, waiting for one of them to be ignorant enough to clearly but irrationally state their thoughts. He couldn't do this by making them overly defensive, he had to do it exactly the way he did. He also covered his ass with Brokaw and any other assholes up the chain that told him to back off. He wasn't aggressive, he asked direct questions and outed a crazy delusional bitch, and can walk in his Monday meetings and look the other assholes in they eye with a smirk on his face. If they are pissed TOO FUCKING BAD, he can say "you had a crazy delusional bitch questioning the patriotism of over 1/2 of the population followed by a crazy racist prick defending her by trying to make a David Duke comparison, why the hell do you book these crazies?"

136. LOL a billion times over
That was a masterful performance by Matthews. I just saw it and I'm in awe. He maintained the most wonderfully stoic hintless facial expression and never changed his tone. His questions were wonderfully simple. Bachmann willingly marched smack over the edge, totally clueless she was in any peril.

In previous years I've seen Matthews perfect that little smirk of his in similar circumstance, and raise his voice in mocking fashion, essentially telling the guest to wise up.

He deserves an Emmy.

138. Final argument
So I am getting text messages and emails from fucking nuts all day long. How can you have an Obama sign in your yard, Obama is a terrorist, on and on.

One friend is a complete nut job, sends an email stating the whole economic crisis is due to Carter, Clinton, Maxine Waters, and Barney Frank. I send short responses back, he keeps going nuts. I send him the link to the Matthews/Bachmann interview, along with comments about how his repuke party is completely screwed up and under the control of the Christian right. His response:

At first glance she looked kinda hot......kinda like sarah palin with her glasses off......until the sound came on.....im glad the windows are shut in my apartment right now or i would have jumped out of the window after watching that video....holy cow what a loon.

McCain's an idiot, but Obama is dead ass wrong right now on how to fix the economy, he's definitely a very smart guy, and a quick learner, and hopefully he also has the balls to figure out the right answers and adapt, and I think he might, and if he surrounds himself with some good people, and distances himself from Pelosi, Reid, and Kennedy, and runs his own show it might be okay.........My gut tells me that Obama is definitely smart enough, to actually arrive at the correct answers with the right people in place. I get the sense he is saying what he needs to right now to win, and then we see some good decisions later on. He needs to throw those other assholes out and not listen to them, like Pelosi. I ordering my Rosseta "French" language software now.....

I rest my case.
