Putting this race in perspective.

Imagine if Obama and Biden were running a campaign 'in the style' of McCain Palin.

New York City (AP)

At a rally in the Democratic Heartland Joe Biden re-iterated his charge that John McCain was brainwashed by Vietnamese Communists while collaborating with the enemy after his questionable 'capture' flying a bombing mission over Communist Vietnam. "John's a Manchurian Candidate" Biden said, to cries of "kill him" from the crowd. "He's not one of us" Biden continued, "we can't trust him".

The Manchurian Candidate is a 1959 thriller novel written by Richard Condon, adapted into films in 1962 and 2004. It is about the son of a prominent political family who has been brainwashed into becoming an unwilling assassin for the Communist Party. The novel has been banned in communist states "for political reasons" and was "condemned by the American Legion."

It is known that North Korea and China and possibly Vietnam engaged in advanced interrogation techniques commonly referred to as 'brainwashing'. Senator McCain has acknowledged that he was indeed held in a Vietnamese prison for five years. It is not known if he was subjected to such techniques.

San Francisco (Reuters)

When asked about Senator Biden's inflammatory charges against McCain, Senator Obama said that "he really wasn't concerned about events that happened 40 years ago, but that the American people deserve the truth about the brainwashing that John received while collaborating with his Vietnamese captors." Obama went on to demand that McCain apologize for remarks made by Pat Buchanan that compared the Obama campaign rallies to the "two minute hate" sessions described in the novel 1984. "That sort of dirty campaigning and over the top language by McCain surrogates has no place in Patriotic American politics", Obama noted.

The McCain campaign has so far refused to apologize for Mr. Buchanan's remarks, although they have issued a press release distancing themselves from Buchanan.
