In Philly, Conservative Talk Radio Host Backs Obama
ABC News ABC News

On his talk show on WPHT today, conservative Philadelphian Michael Smerconish endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Smerconish did so by reading a couple paragraphs from his pending op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"I’ve decided," he said. "My conclusion comes after reading the candidates’ memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.

"John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I’m voting for a Democrat for president.

"I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia," says the Republican.

2. He wrote a LONG piece in Salon about this over a month ago.
I posted the link in another thread about it this morning. He's been viciously attacked by his own people for doing so.

4. As was Christopher Buckley. He was forced to quit his job at the magazine his father founded.

8. I have new respect for Smerconish
His show isn't all politics. Alot of it is just Philadelphia and what's going on in the city. Doing this and being on the Big Talker 1210 which carries both Rush and Hannity is an incredibly brave thing to do.

At the end of the day I believe he's a patriot and realizes that he's been bamboozled the past 8 years.

11. I live in Jersey and listen to him in the morning on the way to work
and I can tell you he's going to get bashed to no end Monday morning because most of his listeners and callers are Rethugs.

12. wow, I must say that I usually disagree with Smerconish.......
but this endorsement is worthy of respect. He'll face a backlash from his listeners and more importantly from other conservative movement folks.
