Which is the real McCain?

At the Alfred E. Smith dinner last night he was gracious and complimentary toward Obama and all the others there, and acted like he really knows he won't win and is at peace with it. He's the guy that I could believe is good friends with Joe Biden.

Then on the stump and during a debate he's sneering and sarcastic and pounding out a populist tone. Us against them, I'm gonna work for you, etc etc. He lies about Obama's character and record with no qualms.

One of these personas has to be a fake. Question is, which one?

I'm ready to say that he's really the nicer more moderate guy, still with a temper problem, but not as stupid and narrow as he appears as a candidate on the stump.

or My Own Worst Enemy - who is to say which is the real McCain/McSame? Perhaps they both are.

His drive to be President has obscured all else. He has said in the past he would rather lose an election than a war, but it seems he is all too willing to sell his soul to win the election.
