OBAMA: "I want everybody running scared...Don't underestimate our ability to screw it all up!"
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 09:34 AM by quantass
Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel sang at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC for the fund-raising concert benefiting the Obama Victory Fund. No total estimate was provided, but tickets ranged from a balcony seat ($500, which sold out quickly) to a lounge ticket for $25,000. The ballroom's event manager said 1,959 people were on hand.

Obama eventually came on stage:
"This is the moment when we are being tested. This is the time when we are going to have to look back 10 years from now, 20 years from now and say, did we lose our nerve? Did we lose our sense of purpose? Or did we rise up and come together?"

Mr. Obama urged his supporters to buckle down and do more than send money.

"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," Mr. Obama said. "Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up."

He added, "I want everybody running scared. Over the next 18 days, other than your family and your job, I want you to make a decision that there is nothing more important than bringing about this change that we need."

He closed with a classic tune of his own: "Fired up, Ready to Go!"

Yes, that's right, cue the B-Roll for Edith Childs, Greenwood, S.C.

The band returned for an encore, "Signed Sealed Delivered," which drew Michelle Obama out onto the stage to join her husband in a little dance, a little hip bumping and a lot of clapping to the beat.

Wise words for all of us, methinks.

4. very poor choice of words, imo, if true
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 09:39 AM by Essene
he's made 2 very un-obama-like slip ups now, allowing his words to be easily taken out of context.

a) the "spread the wealth" slip was absolutely amateurish, and i fully understand the context. if you are a democrat, those are 3 words that better NEVER come out of your damn mouth.

b) i want everybody running scared

he's getting too comfortable himself, so he needs to take his own medicine on this...

he is spending too much time with biden :)

6. Uh, why is this so bad?
It's the unvarnished truth. I'd want everyone working like we were five points down rather than seven points up, thanks. And he's right--Dems do have a habit of fucking it up at the last moment--2006 notwithstanding.

13. oh please
The republicans are desperate and will take Obama's words out of context because they are searching for that lifeline, the only way he can stop this from happening is to keep his mouth shut. Is that your suggestion?

17. I guess we'd have to ban him from this board for being a "concern troll"
Which kind of illustrates how much that term is overused here.

21. I am running scared
I'm scared the robo calls will work.
I'm scared of the voter purges.
I'm scared there will be voter supression.
And I'm scared of complacency.

It's not like any of these things have never ever happened before.
