Politico... Obama may expand campaign into ND, WV, GA and yes even Kentucky!

From Politico.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Sen. Barack Obama is on offense, and Sen. John McCain on defense, and the next 19 days offer little chance of a change in that dynamic.

--------- Snip--------------------

They’re all states that are trending blue,” said Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.). “Offense, offense, offense.”

And Obama is weighing broadening a map that already appears big and red into four more states. A top adviser, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, said Obama is considering expanding his active campaign back into North Dakota and Georgia, from which he’d shifted resources, and into the Appalachian heartland of West Virginia and Kentucky.

“Those states are much more in play than they were a week ago,” Daschle said.

They say you can tell how a campaign is going by where a candidate is. I think we now have definitive proof of how Obama is REALLY DOING!

2. Helpful for the Senate and House races, if nothing else.
There's definitely close Senate races in GA and KY that the Dems are eyeing.

9. Absolutely
He can lose KY and GA but the bigger turnout might help the democratic senate candidates win there. A smart move if true.

33. And even if we can't knock McConnell out this time
We can serve him. And that just might change how he behaves the next 6 years.

For decades, the GOP candidates were safe in carrying the water for their corporate overlords because there really weren't any consequences in most of these red states. Even if McConnell survives, he will see that this grass roots movement is coming for him.

Best case for him, he will be far outnumbered in opposition. He will have to make a choices. He can either work with us or invite an even more vigorous push against him the next time. We are making a fundamental change in many states, which means the most radical, unhelpful Republicans will get sharper targets on their chests -- simply because we will have eliminated many of their friends already.

4. I live in a red state and voted yesterday. The line was wrapped around the building.
Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 08:30 AM by genna
I asked a poll worker how long had the lines been like this. The entire process took about 30 to 45 minutes. She said that it had been like this since Georgia allowed people to vote from the time the polls open at 7 am until they close at 7 pm. They've had to hire more poll workers and get more voting machines to handle the increased interest. They said they've never seen anything like this.

Paul Begala of the primary fame would have enjoyed that we were mostly eggheads and African Americans. There were a few older Georgians that looked disgusted, but hey what can you do?

13. Hey, don't get down about it - he does still have a presence here!
Seriously, there's offices in many places around the state. Ads are playing in the state, not just in the areas close to NC and VA. We're getting tons of money and volunteers, as well as a great many disaffected Republicans!

I'm hopeful. The goal is going to be to at least make it close to set up future races. Remember, Bob Corker will be up for re-election in the next Presidential cycle and he's easily defeatable if we have a strong candidate to latch onto Obama's message!

Just saw one on McCain's healthcare policy that will tax health insurance benefits.

And McCain calls that an attack ad? Wow...thin-skinned much, John?

Is he probably figures if he can get McCain to spend money in these states to try and defend them, that it's going to stretch McCain dollar wise in states he needs to be spending money in.

38. West Virginia and Georgia could work, maybe even North Dakota, but I'm not sure about Kentucky.
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 12:59 AM by FVZA_Colonel
I almost feel like it might be worth spending the money shoring up Colorado, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and even Minneosta (though that is probably a bit much, as it's basically a lock for Obama at this point.)

Of course, I don't have access to their information and resources, and they are refocusing some people from Michigan elsewhere, so this could work in West Virginia and Georgia, at least.

Obama may not win these states, but to help create momentum, it may make sense to make the really blood red states just a tad less red.
