Buchanan to Lincoln, Hoover to FDR, Bush to Obama
The idea that crap presidents are immediately followed by the greatest ones is about to play out again

1. McCain has been trying to compare Obama to ... Hoover!
No really.

Does that mean McCain is comparing himself to FDR, the great Liberal president who all the Republicans hate?

3. Ironically, half McCain's policy proposals are paraphrases of FDR...
Must be giving the right wing the bends...

7. Uh, no.
Clinton was an okay President, but he wasn't in league with FDR or Lincoln. Those two faced major national trials that tested them; Clinton did not. It's certainly not his fault that things went well while he was President, but Clinton really was more on par with Eisenhower. Did a decent job, had some important accomplishments, but didn't save the nation from the brink of destruction like Lincoln or FDR.

Time will tell with Obama.

4. Yeah, and I think there's a good reason for it
It's not an accident, not coincidence. The Repukes deliberately screw everything up so badly that there's no choice but for the Dems to come in and clean up after them - this cycle plays over and over.

However, I've been reading some history lately that suggests that several factors that were important in times past are no longer relevent -- namely the Cold War (although that could change soon with all the oil money going to Russia these days) and that steps taken in times past were done as a direct response to the threat of the possibility of "the spread of communism" (eg, the Marshall plan, the New Deal). Lacking that threat, it may not seem so urgent. We'll see.
