I did some searching and found this:

Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher related to Charles Keating. Oops.
October 16th, 2008 . by Marty

John McCain did great tonight in the debate. But every time John mentioned “Joe the Plumber,” some of us in the campaign banged our heads against the wall. If Steve Schmidt had any hair left, I hear he would have been pulling it out tonight. He reportedly screamed at John’s debate prep team tonight (out of earshot of reporters, of course). “You idiots - he’s related to Charles Keating… of the Keating Five scandal!” They thought they had a real live Joe Six-Pack who’s spurned Barack Obama’s tax plan. But what they forgot to do was check on Joe Wurzelbacher’s background.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Does any of this make Joe the Plumber a bad guy? Of course not. But on a night when McCain accused Obama of guilt-by-association, this isn’t going to look good for us. Hello, but on a night when John goes full bore on William Ayers and dodges a bullet by Obama not mentioning Keating Five, the press is going to bring it back front and center by midday tomorrow once they delve deeper into the most popular plumber in America.

This might remind you of the Paris Hilton scandal - where one side of the McCain campaign attacked her in an ad, not realizing that her family were huge donors. I was the first to warn the campaign of the perils of miscommunication, and that story flared for a week.

And just what was this poor shmoe "Joe the Plumber" who lives in the Cinncinati area doing in Toledo coincidentally on the ONLY day that Barack Obama was campaigning there? They are 200 miles apart! There is NO Joe Wurzelbacher in Toledo but there is one in Cinncinnati.

38. NY Times article From May 16, 1992: Keating In-Law Enters Plea And Will Assist Prosecutors
By RICHARD W. STEVENSON,

A son-in-law of Charles H. Keating Jr. pleaded guilty today to three Federal fraud counts in connection with the collapse of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Assocation and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors as they pursue their case against Mr. Keating.

The guilty plea was the sixth from executives and business associates of Lincoln and its parent company, but was the first crack in what until now had been a united Keating family defense against the charges in the case.

Mr. Keating and a son, Charles H. Keating 3d, still face an array of fraud and racketeering charges brought against them in a 77-count Federal indictment issued last year. Their trial is scheduled for August in Federal District Court here. Mr. Keating was convicted last year on separate fraud counts in a California state court and is serving a 10-year prison sentence. Bad Loans to a Hotel

The guilty plea today was from Robert M. Wurzelbacher Jr., who had been a senior vice president of Lincoln's parent company, the American Continental Corporation of Phoenix, and the chief executive of an investment firm owned by Lincoln Savings. Mr. Wurzelbacher, who is 38 years old, is married to the former Elizabeth Keating, one of Mr. Keating's daughters.

Mr. Wurzelbacher pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer to three felony counts of misapplication of federally insured funds. The charges were not among those made against Mr. Wurzelbacher in last year's Federal indictment.

His guilty plea involved charges arising from $13 million in loans and advances made by Lincoln Savings, which was based in Irvine, Calif. The money went to a limited partnership that owned and operated the Hotel Pontchartrain in Detroit.

Mr. Wurzelbacher and other officers and employees of Lincoln and American Continental, including Mr. Keating and his son, were partners in the limited partnership, according to court documents.

The prosecutors said that in pleading guilty Mr. Wurzelbacher admitted that he and other Lincoln and American Continental executives had made the loans and advances knowing that they probably would not be repaid and were not in Lincoln's best interests.

Prosecutors said that the hotel suffered large losses, but that the limited partnership generated substantial tax benefits for Mr. Wurzelbacher and the other limited partners.

In all, Lincoln suffered losses of more than $23 million on loans to the hotel, according to a civil suit against Mr. Keating filed last year by the Resolution Trust Corporation, the Federal savings and loan bailout agency.

Mark Beck, a lawyer for Mr. Wurzelbacher, said that in pleading guilty to three counts his client would not be subject to the strict sentencing guidelines that would apply to the charges in the indictment.

"It was not an easy decision, but he had to keep in mind that as the father of two grade-school children he faced substantial consequences if the defense was unsuccessful at trial," Mr. Beck said.

Lincoln was seized by Federal regulators three years ago just after American Continental filed for bankruptcy protection. Lincoln's collapse is expected to cost taxpayers $2.6 billion. Mr. Keating, unfairly in his view, has come to embody the political influence peddling, mismanagement and fraud that pervaded the savings and loan industry.

As part of his plea, Mr. Wurzelbacher agreed to cooperate with the continuing investigation of Lincoln by the United States Justice Department and a host of state and local law-enforcement and regulatory agencies, said David A. Sklansky, an assistant United States attorney who is prosecuting the case.

Mr. Sklansky said the Government had also agreed to move for dismissal of all the counts against Mr. Wurzelbacher in the Federal indictment. Mr. Wurzelbacher could be sentenced to as many as 15 years in prison and fined as much as twice the loss caused by his actions.

92. Ah,the good ol' Hotel Pontchartrain!!!!!!!
When I worked at Lincoln Savings for the RTC in 1991-1992, that was one of the most active files. I can't tell you how many times I lugged those enormous books out of the file room, copied hundreds of pages, and handed them to the lawyers.

And yes, I remember a substantial amount of the details.

39. This is just getting more and more absurd as more info is revealed on Joe
He is CLEARLY in the tank for McCain and trying to conjure up some sort of story to impress his freeper friends. I bet he did do it spontaneously but now regrets it because all his bullsh!t is going to come out and I'm sure it will piss his family off to no end given they are big Republican donors.

Everyone should listen to the Couric interview to hear how in the tank for McCain this guy is while trying to pretend his isn't. He is nothing but a racist wingnut who tried comparing Obama to Sammy Davis Jr., and got shot-down while trying to stump Obama on his tax plan.

seriously, i work on wall street in a very data driven environment, i'm not one to jump to conclusions but this whole Joe thing is odd on so many levels. It just doesn't smell right, this could wind up being a big hoax played on the entire country for the sake of some loser's 15 minutes of fame and some fodder for GOP talking points. The mainstream media will probably be behind the curve on this, I hope the bloggers and independent investigators can figure this out.

Confirmation of Joe’s Identity and Link to Keating •October 16, 2008 • 6 Comments
2:15 am Thursday October 16. 2008

Ok, this is the big one. We have confirmation that the last name we were using is in fact correct so I will now reveal the connections since the name has been said on MSNBC and CBS.

Joe the Plumber is Joe Wurzelbacher. There is a Jan Wurzelbacher associated with a Joe and the address with the building I have pictured below. Earlier tonight I called the number associated with that address and the name Wurzelbacher Bros. and the machine message made no mention at all of any business.

Now to the Keating connection. As mentioned in a previous post the name Wurzelbacher is fairly uncommon so it’s not hard to track down potential connections just using geography and ages to make the likely connections. There is a Robert Wurzelbacher who died in 2004 (possibly deceased is more accurate) who is in the same area and is of an appropriate age to be a parent or uncle to Joe who according to reunion.com is 33. This Robert Wurzelbacher not only had a history of campaign contributions to republicans but is implicated in the Keating Five scandal. The full text of the article relating to this is below. There are other Wurzelbacher contributions to McCain and other republicans in other parts of the country. We are looking into those now. With the confirmation of the last name and the limit number of family members this looks very bad. There is also no such plumbing business listed or advertising and the number I called (I only called one so as not to disturb at a home number late at night) makes no effort to tell you that you have reached a business. This is looking very, very much like an act.

74. Joe Wurzelbacher of Shrewsbury Street in Springfield Township
'Joe the Plumber' is focus of presidential debate's first few minutes

By BRIDGET THARP and MARK ZABORNEY
BLADE STAFF WRITERS

The story of "Joe the Plumber" - Joe Wurzelbacher of Shrewsbury Street in Springfield Township - became a centerpiece of the early minutes of the presidential debate last night.
And Joe the Plumber became the subject of national and international interest.
Mr. Wurzelbacher, 34, was more interested in taking in the debate than in assessing his place in presidential politics.
"Honestly, I'm a small part of it," Mr. Wurzelbacher said. "They're just using me as an example right now for the American public. I think they're discussing more important is-sues."

He excused himself so he could finish watching Barack Obama and John McCain debate.

By Robert Barnes
Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber, he's "not even close" to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama's proposals and has such an aversion to taxes that a lien was filed against him by the state of Ohio.

Such is the whirlwind of information that has come out about Joe Wurzelbacher of Holland, Ohio, since Republican John McCain made him famous in last night's debate. McCain mentioned him more than 20 times to use him as a symbol of hard-working Americans who would be hurt by Obama's tax policies. Obama and Wurzelbacher met earlier in the week in Toledo, where Wurzelbacher said Obama's plans to raise taxes on those making $250,000 a year or more would penalize him in his plans to buy the plumbing business for which he works.

Wurzelbacher since then has been on Fox News, interviewed by CBS's Katie Couric and appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Not all the attention has been welcomed. Wurzelbacher, 34, told the Associated Press that he was not a licensed plumber. Because he works for a small company that does residential work, he said, he doesn't need to be licensed.

Wurzelbacher, whose legal name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, owes the state of Ohio $1,182 in personal income taxes, according to tax records that show a lien for that amount filed against him in January 2007.

Wurzelbacher said he is of modest means, but worried Obama's tax plans would eventually hurt him. "You see my house. I don't have a lot of bells and whistles in here, really. My truck's a couple of years old and I'm going to have it for the next 10 years probably. So I don't see helping me out,'' he told reporters this morning.

He also sounded concerned about the attention he is receiving. "I'm completely flabbergasted with this whole thing and just hope I'm not making too much of a fool of myself and hope I can get my message out there," he said.

108. This is appalling on so many levels
I would argue that the larger mishap here is the McCain camp's failure to make rational decisions based on the most up-to-date, factual information available, rather than shooting from the hip. Perhaps McCain can live with the consequences of this sort of decision making, as he has stated in one of his ghost-written books, but the American people cannot live with these consequences.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 10:46 AM by mcg
I'm guessing that this family business is owned by relatives of Joe Wurzelbacher and that Joe is part of this business already.

Wurzelbacher Brothers - Cincinnati, OH - Septic Tanks & Systems

11260 Colerain Ave
Cincinnati, OH 45252

Wurzelbacher Richard R, Wurzelbacher Brothers Septic Tanks

http://www.yellowpages.com/info-LMS56712316/Wurzelbacher-Brothers?from=qpibp-mi

From
http://www.anywho.com

Wurzelbacher, Joseph
12172 Stone Mill Rd
Colerain Township, OH 45251

http://www.anywho.com/md.html?textAddress=12172%20Stone%20Mill%20Rd%20Colerain%20Township%20OH%2045251

http://www.anywho.com/md.html?textAddress=11260%20Colerain%20Ave%20Cincinnati%20OH%2045252

Look at maps of these addresses, they are only about 2 miles apart. Colerain Township is really part of Cincinnati.

If I'm correct, it looks like Joe is already set up nicely to be a business owner, if he isn't already one.

John McCain runs a lousy operation. This is gonna blow up in his face just like every other lame-ass stunt his people try to pull.

Maybe he should announce that he's suspending his campaign until Joe the Plumber comes clean.

I could ask 100 random people I come across today if they know what "Socialism" is and I promise you that 95% or more wouldn't know what it is. Sure, we here at DU know, and others who follow politics CLOSELY but the average plumber isn't gonna know.

So, when Joe accuses Obama of being a "Socialist" that was the first thing that was strange to me. While the Bush Admin is in Warshington buying up banks, they wanted this plant on TV the day before the debate accusing Obama of being a Socialist. This guy has GOT to be a plant.

I've gotten a few emails from listeners citing "Stateof Ohio vs. Joseph Wurzelbacher" in domestic violence cases. 3/3/2004, 2/10/2003, 2/2/1998. Case numbers C/03/CRB/4412, DV0400222, and no case number listed for the 98 case. Is this the same guy and are these real cases or is this some slime attempt? Apparently these are public records and easily searched, if the emails are to be believed (and they often aren't)...

I though it was a very lucky coincidence for John McCain to be able to get on tape (just days before a debate) an “Average Joe” who could be affected by Obama’s tax hike. Now really, how many plumbers make more than $250k a year?

not sure what to think about "Joe the Plumber" but one thing is for sure: he supports McCain and is an asshole-(okay two things)

he owes back taxes, has been arrested for domestic violence three times, so he's not exactly a guy McCain needs to use as the "all-around-Joe"...in fact, this reeks even more because of all the "stuff" we've now found out about this asshole.

173. His first name is Samuel, and he's not a licensed plumber

Updated 3:20 p.m.

"I'm completely flabbergasted with this whole thing and just hope I'm not making too much of a fool of myself and hope I can get my message out there," he said.

this just kind of took on a life all it's own. We are a very excitable bunch these days:D This TWO YEAR election is about to drive us all loony. After the drought years under Bush's rule, I guess it has left us giddy and paranoid. So what? We found out a lot about our "Sam the plumber" who is of no significance to us, however, I'm sure he is to the tax lien he owes. So why does John McCain keep making him the poster boy for change and why do we keep taking the bait? Simply, he is desperate--and actually, so are we. We cannot stand the thought of more republican rule in this country.

I have to say, after six years of being a member at DU and many posts later, I've never had a response quite like this to something that I initially posted as a rhetorical question/comment. These are indeed desperate times when we (me included) spend this much time on a guy that is a rwing racist tool.

...has pissed off the REAL plumbers of my hometown.

http://www.qctimes.com/articles/2008/10/16/news/local/doc48f800309c04d838319567.txt?sPos=1

Joe the Plumber, meet Jeff the Plumber.

Jeff Liske is a business agent for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 25 in Rock Island. He wants people to know that although Republican presidential nominee John McCain used your story to illustrate why people should vote for him, you do not represent all plumbers.

“He’s a businessman, not necessarily Joe the working man,” Liske said of Joe Wurzelbacher, an Ohio plumber mentioned by McCain several times during Wednesday night’s debate with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. “McCain was trying to manipulate ‘Joe the Plumber’ to mean the working man is not for Barack Obama, which, of course, we are.”

Liske noted that the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters was the first of the trade unions to endorse Obama, a U.S. senator from Chicago.

During the debate, McCain told the story of Wurzelbacher while arguing that he has a better economic plan than Obama. Wurzelbacher was cited by McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, as an example of someone who wants to buy a plumbing business but would be hurt by Obama’s tax plan.

“Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years, worked 10, 12 hours a day. And he wanted to buy the business, but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes,” McCain said to Obama.

On Sunday in Toledo, Wurzelbacher told Obama during a campaign stop that he was preparing to buy the business, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?”

Under his plan, Obama said, any revenue exceeding $250,000 would be subject to a 39 percent tax instead of the current tax rate of 36 percent.

Although Liske said most working plumbers and apprentices being trained at the union hall support Obama, some owners of small plumbing businesses in the Quad-City area said they sympathize with Wurzelbacher and support McCain.

“Obama is not going to attack the little guy, he’s going to attack business,” said Joel Dohrmann of Dohrmann Plumbing, Heating and Excavating in DeWitt, Iowa. “If they raise taxes on us, it’s going to relate to what we have to charge.”

Bob Tappendorf of Tappendorf Plumbing & Heating in Bettendorf agreed.

“We’re trying to hold costs down. Labor rates are up, materials are up and the last thing we need is higher taxes,” he said. “It’s a day-to-day battle trying to get jobs and have people afford to hire you. It’s not just a given that you’re going to have work for your employees next month.”

Meanwhile, plumbers interviewed for this story said they received calls all day from friends and customers ribbing them about being used as an example of the ultimate common American.

“We’re the ones you see in the ditches,” said Chad Dawson, an organizer for the Illinois Pipe Trades Association.

At the union hall in Rock Island, workers passed around a flier that proclaimed, “Vote Joe The Plumber ’08.” The flier, which Liske said someone got off the Internet, used a logo similar to Obama’s with the words “Flush John McCain” beneath it.

“It’s been a steady joke,” Liske said. “Everybody’s looking for Joe.”

217. AT 1/4 Million the tax hike is a whopping 3% more. Think it's going to break him.
BUT there is also the tax break for hiring full time employees AND all businesses get to write off their "losses" the first year or two anyway because it's a given that starting a business is difficult and for the real benefit to the communities rewards are given to those who take on the challenge.

"Joe" will have to work smarter and run his business plan through a couple of scenarios instead of just jumping in with both feet.
