PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't disabuse bush supporters of the notion
that he is ahead in the polls.

LET THEM THINK SO.

We know polls don't mean dick. (We DO, right? If you don't, learn it.) EVEN when our guy is up, I pay them no heed. Why? The only thing that counts is election day.

So. If bushies believe they are way up, they are going to get fat and lazy. Like big piles of goo that just sit there and blink.

Blink blink. Blink blink. "He's ahead. YAY!" Blink blink.

LET THEM.

MEANWHILE, we stay hungry and keep working. I think it's somewhat of a curse to have polls put out that shows your guy up 60 days out. Volunteers and campaign workers on BOTH SIDES are exhausted right now. Absolutely dog-tired. And they just had their convention. They are even MORE worn out. Let them feel like they can take a nice breather.

Also, every time someone posts an "OHMYGOD LOOK AT THIS POLL! I AM FREAKING OUT!" post, I am going to ask you how many people you have registered to vote and how many hours you have volunteered for Kerry.

I think that's a fair question. If you are worried about polls, then you need to do something. But we can't frigging hear anything for all the noise of screaming, gnashing of teeth, and rending of faces around here. We need to clear our heads and start being constructive. And get out there and hit the pavement, especially if you live in a swing state!

Meanwhile, I'm going to Louisiana next weekend to walk the streets and ring on doorbells for Kerry. I suggest, respectfully, if the polls are making you crazy, that you do something similar.

But please don't disabuse the bushies of the notion of him being up in the polls. I WANT THEM LAZY.

11. It is here too
hubby and I flew to Iowa last September to canvass for Dean (he was our man, originally). Our daughter is nine, but she's been to more meetups and rallies than any kid she knows!

3. Being down 10 points does have an upside.
Puts the motivational fear in us and complacency in them. Of course, we aren't down 10 and this will be evident as new pollind data is released.

But when they SAY things like that, I just sort of smile. Or nod. Or do nothing.

12. COOL!
I'm in TX so I see that, too. They are so overconfident, in fact, that it rarely comes up.

But I know some bushies on the internet (not freeperland, I don't go there!) who are all excited about the Time poll and I do NOT want anyone messing with that! One even SAID she feels like she can lay off the phone-banking now! And she lives in freaking OHIO!! I was SO damn excited!

13. The only thing that worries me about that
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 01:11 AM by sub.theory
...is if Democrats start getting discouraged and decide we can't win, so they drop out and start looking for work visas in Canada. Keeping morale up on our side is important too. People on the left are frustrated enough as it is. The thought that we might lose is just too disheartening for many Dems, and I don't know that I can really blame them.

Edit: Fixed subject line

15. Then spread around that link
where someone showed the analysis of the TIME poll to all your Dem friends. Spread it far and wide among Dems!

Bushies won't be inclined to believe it was a bogus poll because they want to believe their guy is up.

But Dems should know (as I said in the post) that polls mean dick. If they don't know tell 'em!!!!!

I could see us getting seriously discouraged if tons of polls came out showing bush way ahead, but this? Nah.

19. I understand what you are saying
and in principle, I agree. If we could drag down Repug turnout, that would be fantastic. The problem is that tactics like these can take on a life of their own. If it's a close election, and there's no reason to think it won't be, a couple hundred Dems in a swing state who decide it's hopeless could very well cost us the election.

Maybe I'm just overreacting, but that really does concern me.

20. No I don't think you are overreacting
because I can see your point, too.

I guess my viewpoint is skewed a bit because I've actually seen bushies get complacent over this poll and I thought, "Hey! Good freaking deal!!!"

14. Good for you!!!
Say it loud and say it often. There's one way to win and that's to get people to the polls. Nothing else matters.

16. the problem with undecided voters
is that they'll blow with the wind. They hear that Bush had a great convention and Kerry didn't, that Bush looks like a winner and Kerry doesn't. They then examine what Kerry did wrong, and what Bush did right in the media, then it becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. This happened with Bill Clinton in 1992 New Hampshire, where he declared himself the "winner" after losing to Paul Tsongas and it stuck. If the poll data is flawed, it needs to be pointed out ASAP. We'll see Newsweek's poll tomorrow I'm guessing (they did Kerry's on a Saturday), so that should provide more insight.

18. True
and I am not against putting information out there to show that the TIME poll was skewed, I read all about that and I think it was a particularly bogus poll.

Eh, you have a point. I guess I'm just sick of all the hand-wringing.

You're doing the right thing making sure every Dem/Liberal/sane American shows up at the polls on Nov 2 to pull the level for John Kerry. No one could ask anything more of you. We're going to beat these bastards, together. :grouphug:

21. I disagree.
Amercians love a winner. And when the propaganda machine is working in full force, that alone can sway votes among those with the herd mentality.

Republicans have been doing this for 25 years now, and some of you still don't see it.

They exude confidence, never talk doom and gloom, never openly criticize anybody in the GOP. They are lockstep in their message, and even if they're not sure they're going to win, they project it to everyone they talk to as if it's always been in the bag.

It's this kind of surety and confidence that translates into votes. An undecided looks at this poll, listens to the crows of the GOP, and thinks "Well, I don't know anything, but if 52% say this, then this must be right." ....eventually it becomes 54%. We need to shoot as many holes in their beautiful ballon before it flys up, up and away.

You may see the overconfidence for what it is, but when it comes to the crunch, the GOP is in charge of this nation because of this exact overconfident strategy (among empty promises, smears, and lies) that put them there, and us out.

And, for the record. I signed up 25 new voters in the last 2 weeks...without any yard signs or buttons to give out.

24. No. Thy're convention was about fearing us.
Trashing Kerry, hating Democrats, and...well...that;s about it.

Vote for Bush or you're ALL GOING TO DIE!

And they all said it with one voice.

Unhinged and desperate, yes, but not doom and gloom. Not one person interviewed, much less on stage thought they were going to lose this year. If they would have, that's doom and gloom.
