Wow....."whip" remark....imagine if.....
Is McCain losing it?

I mean, what white person in any form of their right mind would ever, and I mean, ever, think it would be okay to even make such a remark when talking about a black person.

On top of that, I'd really love to hear the remarks of the right wing if Obama had made some comment like he was going to put McCain "out to pasture" or "wheel him back to the home."

I realize these don't even come close to the level that McCain's "whip" remark did, but we're going to see a lot of right wingers talking about how it was not an offensive quip and people need to quit being so hyper sensitive.

1. Agreed.
I thought at first it was "rip" but "whip" is worse in the context of race.

3. Race aside... What politician running for a national office
would say something like that in general? Even if he meant it in the good-hearted sporting way. it's just not appropriate, ever.

21. "What politician"...? What about George H.W. Bush?
Remember, after the V.P. debate against Ferraro in 1984, he bragged about how he'd "kicked a little ass." :puke:

(That debate was the first time I found myself hating a Bush. Obviously, it wouldn't be the last.)

4. There us na reason people say "whup your ass" instead of "whip.."
Whip has racial connotations. But of course McCain didn't know that did he?

6. the remark was highly inappropriate and insensitve, just as the "that one" remark was
I'm really beginning to think that the guy is just losing it, marbles that is. This, as his other remark, will not go over well and will only put more pressure on his debate performance on Wednesday. If it compares with his last two, he will be the one taking the "whipping".

8. whip someone's ass is an idiom that means "to defeat" that person
It's like the "pig with lipstick" phrase. It's metaphorical, not literal.

9. No, it's not like "pig with lipstick"....
Yes, we all know it is "metaphorical" and not literal, but the use of the word in this case is unbelievably ignorant.

See, what I think you are missing is McCain might have been okay if he had said "kick" or some other type of word, but not "whip."

10. I think that's fake outrage
Since the context shows that he was referring to the debate. And only concern troll make that contrived connection.

14. Where did you see "outrage".....missing the point...
No where did I mention the word "outrage"...

My point is that it is incredibly stupid for McCain to do this and no matter how one cuts it, racial undertones are present in this usage, whether you can see them or not. And if you can't, I suggest you move along...

18. Nontheless, in this already racially-charged race (due entirely to
the, McCain campaign's dog whistles and hatemongering), it is at the very least in poor taste, and AFAIAC it's blatantly racist.

And yes, I am a middle class white professional and a woman.

13. Didn't Jimmy Carter once say "I'll whip his ass" in reference to Ted Kennedy?
My friend Google informs me that he did.

I don't think outrage is called for in this case. McCain's just talking trash before the big fight. Not everything has a racial subtext, and we do a disservice to Obama if we cry race too often. Reserve the R word for the real stuff.

15. And what is missing in your Carter/Kennedy and McCain/Obama comparison?
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 11:51 PM by HardWorkingDem
Carter and Kennedy are white. At the least, McCain's usage is terribly insensitive. And I don't think there is any where in my OP where I mentioned "outrage." Though I can guarantee you that if Obama had used some sort of similar word use pointing to McCain's age, then the right wing noise machine would be going crazy.

My point is that if anything, this is just a piece of the puzzle and a clearer McCain picture is slowly being revealed.

16. I don't agree that McCain was being insensitive.
When I first read about his remark, the idea that the word "whip" had some kind of racial connotation didn't even occur to me. I expect that's true of a lot of people -- including McCain. "I'll whip his ass" is not an uncommon phrase -- plenty of references in articles about boxing.

More generally I don't see the value in parsing language like this to ferret out hidden racial meaning.

17. Geez, its not an offensive quip
Stop over analyzing every single line McCain says to look for any sign of racism. Most of the time it is innocent as "lipstick on a pig", and it makes you look like a fool for pointing it out.

When you cry racism when there isn't any, you lose the credibility to point out the real thing. Palin and McCain's speeches at the rallies are much more insinuating and hateful, so keep the focus their instead of crying wolf over a common expression.

25. Maybe... if this was the only thing.... but its the totality of the shit from McCain
"that one", the whole emphasis on Hussein, and now this...

Its a climate of hatred, fear, and bigotry meant to intimidate and to incite racists who really, really believe that crap

Its not oversensitiveness

20. It would be a firestorm if Obama said that.
The god-damned Earth would be knocked of its axis by the force of pundits and GOP shills shaking their heads and wondering aloud how Obama could show so much disrespect for that great American hero and former POW, John McCain, who was tortured, tortured, tortured. Those gooks all ready whipped Senator McCain's ass for 5.5 years and now this uppity colored fellow wants him to suffer again!

27. I think this outrage is as stupid as the outrage over Opera's comments about beef and how angry she
got when lawyers characterised that as forming 'lynch mob mentality'.

She insisted the term lynch mob was because she was block. I doubt it and I doubt this is anything either. Either way, it sounds stupid and would only energise those who were going to vote Obama anyway. The rest it will sound petty and lame.

28. Did you even read my OP?
The word "outrage" or the level of "outrage" is not even there.

It is about subtle, tone and ignorance on behalf of the McCain campaign. This is one of those things that rests just beneath the surface and makes people wonder about several things.
