Republicans are making me ashamed to be a white person in America. This nation consists of 50%
selfish, stupid, ignorant, childish, greedy assholes. It's hard to admit that 50% of the United States is like this. It's not just Bush/Cheney that has ruined the America's reputation in the world. 50% of America is to blame. This video is the final straw:

1. Ashamed to be white?

I think it has nothing to do with being "white," it's a cultural thing. There are "selfish, stupid, ignorant, childish, greedy assholes" all over the world of every color. Culture can change, your skin color cannot!

5. Every single person in that video is white and many are playing the race card.

7. So? I'm white..
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 10:41 AM by skooooo
..and I don't identify with them whatsoever.

It's the culture of racism and bigotry alive in this country that needs to be the focus of your "shame," not the color.

On edit: and it's not 50% of white people that are like this, imo.

10. I don't identify with them either, but
that's not the point. Non-whites see this kind of behavior and some of them think, "Yes, that's what white people are like." The culture of racism is promulgated mainly by white people, so it's certainly easy for me to see where the OP is coming from. Clearly not all, or even the majority of white people are like that.

24. In the end, though..

...that kind of thinking is dysfunctional. You can't control what other people think about "white people," but you can define yourselves and others by their actions. That's the remedy to racism, I think.

15. That's how I identify as "European-American"
My grandparents immigrated from several European countries (Italy, Poland, and the Czech Republic), and want nothing to do with the white supremacy

I identify more with my European roots than with the idiocy of many white Americans. As a matter of fact, because my maternal grandfather immigrated from Italy, I could become and Italian citizen; all I need is about 4 years and 4 grand.

To each his own I guess. We all know what an oasis Europe is from the worst of human nature. :eyes: Good luck there.
The rest of us will stay here and work through the problems.

19. When that force collides...
...with America's history of white privilege, yes, I feel ashamed of being white. It's not an entirely rational response, but emotions often aren't.

6. couldn't bring myself to watch beyond "bill"
this is just chilling.

My dad used to say of people like that "Don't confuse me with the facts; my mind is made up."

If you WANT Obama to be satan, then you can make up whatever you want to support that premise. The right-to-lifers horror stories and bill's claim that he is a "terror cell" are just plain scary. These are people you could meet on the street, who might sit on a "jury of your peers" if you were to be charged with a crime!

Exactly.

And a DUer posted that Wellstone's number one rule was don't waste time on the whack jobs (paraphrasing).

They're beyond hope and hatred and fear has distorted their humanity.

13. It's really not that bad, you have about 25% of Americans
that will vote Republican if Lucifer himself ran. Now the other 25% I worry about they are really screwed up, how could you still vote for a Republican unless you really are a ignorant, inbred, racist moron.

17. Heck, by that argument, I should be ashamed of being female since Sarah Palin is a woman too.
You don't need to be ashamed. You're not the one engaging in the disgusting behavior.

(I must admit I haven't been too proud about being an American for the last 8 years. But I didn't vote for * so I try to give myself a break.)

18. 50% isnt like this. dont make it bigger than it is. firstly. and doesnt make me ashamed
it has been there anad fed along with sexism in the last decade. this is like bringing a pimple to a head so it can pop and heal. a lot of people that simply dont get it, that deny it are being shown and giving them an opportunity to heal. need to have this happen with the way males are viewing females too. it is all a sickness that contaminates and ultimately keeps us from being who we want to be.

i see it as an opportunity

20. Right, hopefully people who had denied it
will now see it, and be ashamed. I think the shame is an important part of the process and letting them expose themselves was the right way to let this unfold. I am so glad the Obama campaign didn't jump in before it was absolutely undeniable.

23. yup yup yup i agree. when i first had obama stickers on car in very white town, i was so happy
and proud. because beyond everything else, i was saying, this white family is not a racist.... and so many in htis area think it is ok to be. it was allowing me to fight this with many more eyes on the sticker than just verbally when talking to a person.

it is an opportunity i didnt realize

i put my stickers on for obama during clinton obama primary, way back when

28. if only half the eligible population actually votes, then it's 25% AND....
if you include children and those that are otherwise ineligible to vote... then the percentage goes down even MORE drastically

Then we've had maybe 9% (a guess) of the people running the three branches of government for the last eight years.

THEN, if you take into account that among voting Republicans, only a small percentage actually benefit from Corporatism... (the rest are just ideologically deluded into serving the elites)...

It becomes pretty much, a handful of assholes pulling the strings and laughing all the way to the bank...

My point is, it AIN'T HALF OF AMERICA

30. The American people are at fault
They voted for Bush and Cheney. When Bush pushed us into war based upon lies, a significant portion of the American people still voted for Bush/Cheney in 2004. If they were honest patriots and people of honor, they would not have voted for this attrocity and John Kerry would have won in a landslide. I don't care how scared they were. I don't care how many orange alerts ChimpCo put out in the weeks before the 2004 election. I saw through the lies and deception and I'm no genius. Bush/Cheney shouldn't have garnered even 10% of the vote if the American people were honorable and cared about their country. In the latter years of Vietnam, the honorable Americans voted against Nixon as they finally saw that the war was a disaster and that the domino theory was crap. Yet, the majority of Americans voted for Tricky Dick and his Agnew sidekick. Hitler would not have sustained his power if not for the people who supported him by the millions and their ignorant militaristic arrogance. There comes a time when the people can't blame scare tactics or manipulation by their leaders as an excuse for the people to whom they give their support and to whom they abandon their power. You're right. In the end, Bush/Cheney are not the ones who bear the blame, it is the people who supported them who should hang their heads and beg for forgiveness from the rest of us.
