McCain asks crowd to be 'respectful' of Obama

Working to dampen the angry crowd meme, McCain tells his Minnesota rally to take it easy, Amie Parnes reports:

At a town hall in Minnesota, McCain tried to tone down a week of raucus, angry crowds after one man stood up and said: "We want you to fight."

Later in the event, man in the audience stood up and told McCain he's "scared" of an Obama presidency and who he'd select for the Supreme Court.

"I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared of as president of the United States," McCain said as the crowd booed and shouted "Come on, John!"

"If I didn't think I'd be a heck of a lot better, I wouldn't be running for President of the United States."

If it's not the Times editorial board jeering him, it's his own crowd.

35. In fairness, I think I'll commend John for saying something.

He far from blameless in creating this mess (though to be honest, I believe his handlers, and Sarah Palin, have created the mess more so than him...he's more of a Rove puppet).

However, we asked him to say something to the crowds, and he did. As long as he continues to quell any angry mob hate speech at his events, I think we should at least acknowledge him for doing the right thing, even if late, which is better than never.

I don't know if he's doing it more because of the political backlash, or because he genuinely is fearfull of the growing anger, but lets not bag on him for finally doing something right, whatever the motivation.

Earlier I was calling for his exile. I never thought he would confront the crowd as he did.

I truly believe he wanted a clean campaign from the start. However, I don't believe he is charge of his campaign. I don't believe he was aware of many of his own ads or that he selected Palin. I also think he has resisted getting to dirty.

Palin, dumb and eager to please, out of her league and having no knowledge of bounderies, agreed to do whatever it took from the start. She is as dangerous as a kid w/an automatic weapon in a crowd.

Now his campaign is spiraling out of control.

All that said, I don't excuse McCain not one bit.

But, I am glad he spoke out and I truly hope he continues to do so.

It certainly doesn't look good, or feel good, to be booed by your own supporters, so there might be a shred of integrity left in the man. And I think he's bucking his campaign by doing this. Of course, what this shows to me is his inability to lead. It seems everyone involved in his campaign is doing their own thing. I'm a life-long Republican.

Hell, I voted for Nixon. Twice.

I voted for McCain in 2000 and in 2008 in the primaries. I believed him to be a fair and moderate man, not beholden to the Reagan-Bush wing of the Republican party, and one who could work together with Democrats and get things done. His choice of Sarah Palin as running mate made me realize that the long arm of Karl Rowe and Lee Atwater, the same people who destroyed him in 2000, was still at work behind the scenes.

After seeing the hate and bigotry in the GOP crowds this year, I knew my party had to be turned out of power until sanity returns. Alas, that won't happen unless the current Hannitized-Dittohead crowd runs off and creates their own Dominionist/National Socialist party.

If he had chosen Powell, or Romney, or Rob Portman, or even Huckabee, he would have signalled that he was the McCain of 2000, whose contempt for the extreme right was palpable in those days. But this pole dancer Rowe stuck him with is beyond belief.

This is the worst I have ever seen the GOP. Absolutely the worst.

Not that he played it all that well. He didn't have to choose the Rovian gambit. And he didn't have to make the grand stand Palin pick. But he was Bush's heir.
