McCain crowd boos McCain and shouts "Come on, John!
McCain asks crowd to be 'respectful' of Obama

Working to dampen the angry crowd meme, McCain tells his Minnesota rally to take it easy, Amie Parnes reports:

At a town hall in Minnesota, McCain tried to tone down a week of raucus, angry crowds after one man stood up and said: "We want you to fight."

<CLIP>

Later in the event, man in the audience stood up and told McCain he's "scared" of an Obama presidency and who he'd select for the Supreme Court.

"I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don't have to be scared of as president of the United States," McCain said as the crowd booed and shouted "Come on, John!"

"If I didn't think I'd be a heck of a lot better, I wouldn't be running for President of the United States."

If it's not the Times editorial board jeering him, it's his own crowd.

16. Don't almost feel sorry!
He's a spoiled fuck who believes he is entitled to being President.

We show respect to Senator Obama and see him as a leader. In contrast, McCain incites hate and can't even get his supporters to calm down. They don't respect him. This shows exactly what kind of leader he would be. A weak one who couldn't inspire anyone to do anything but hate.

Uuurrrghhh!

19. Great analogy.
Also reminds me of Ed Harris' character in "The Rock", General Hummel- invades Alcatraz with a bunch of mercs, threatens a biological terror strike on SF, but the military calls his bluff and he backs down.

Of course, his men disagree.

I've also seen that look on Cindy's face. As more and more people jump ship from the doomed Republican brand, they are left with the true loonies and only Sarah Palin, a true looney herself, doesn't see it as odd.

That's what Ed Rollins was saying last night on CNN which is why you saw retiring Congressmen like Re. LaHood (an IL kingpin
during the DeLay days) today, and no doubt many others behind the scenes, fretting about McCain's "tone" because it was/is
turning off everyone but the the Rabid Right, including those all-important independent swing voters as well as undecideds.

He has no base. He won because of who he was not. He was not Mittney with the funny religion. He was not Huckabee who could not not get moderates. He was not Gilluani.

Palin has a base. McCain does not.

For real.

I deal mostly in presentations and trainings to adults and it's bad, really bad, when you lose control of your audience. He's lost control. It's scary when that happens.

And I've seen his face when I swear it looks like he's thinking "holy shit." And those are the few rare moments when I've had a pang of sympathy, because his campaign is so far off the rails, it's unreal.

It's like all the sci-fi movies where the scientist creates a monster that eventually kills him and escapes.

35. In fairness, I think I'll commend John for saying something.
He far from blameless in creating this mess (though to be honest, I believe his handlers, and Sarah Palin, have created the mess more so than him...he's more of a Rove puppet).

However, we asked him to say something to the crowds, and he did. As long as he continues to quell any angry mob hate speech at his events, I think we should at least acknowledge him for doing the right thing, even if late, which is better than never.

I don't know if he's doing it more because of the political backlash, or because he genuinely is fearfull of the growing anger, but lets not bag on him for finally doing something right, whatever the motivation.

52. I just saw the clip on MSNBC and I commend him as well.
Earlier I was calling for his exile. I never thought he would confront the crowd as he did.

I truly believe he wanted a clean campaign from the start. However, I don't believe he is charge of his campaign. I don't believe he was aware of many of his own ads or that he selected Palin. I also think he has resisted getting to dirty.

Palin, dumb and eager to please, out of her league and having no knowledge of bounderies, agreed to do whatever it took from the start. She is as dangerous as a kid w/an automatic weapon in a crowd.

Now his campaign is spiraling out of control.

All that said, I don't excuse McCain not one bit.

But, I am glad he spoke out and I truly hope he continues to do so.

Country first and all that.

64. I agree
It certainly doesn't look good, or feel good, to be booed by your own supporters, so there might be a shred of integrity left in the man. And I think he's bucking his campaign by doing this. Of course, what this shows to me is his inability to lead. It seems everyone involved in his campaign is doing their own thing. There's no one at the tiller as much as he tried to convince people during the debate that he would be the one at the helm.

44. Its our fault. We moderate Reps abandoned him
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 06:17 PM by Joiwind
I'm a life-long Republican.

Hell, I voted for Nixon. Twice.

I voted for McCain in 2000 and in 2008 in the primaries. I believed him to be a fair and moderate man, not beholden to the Reagan-Bush wing of the Republican party, and one who could work together with Democrats and get things done. His choice of Sarah Palin as running mate made me realize that the long arm of Karl Rowe and Lee Atwater, the same people who destroyed him in 2000, was still at work behind the scenes.

After seeing the hate and bigotry in the GOP crowds this year, I knew my party had to be turned out of power until sanity returns. Alas, that won't happen unless the current Hannitized-Dittohead crowd runs off and creates their own Dominionist/National Socialist party.

If he had chosen Powell, or Romney, or Rob Portman, or even Huckabee, he would have signalled that he was the McCain of 2000, whose contempt for the extreme right was palpable in those days. But this pole dancer Rowe stuck him with is beyond belief.

This is the worst I have ever seen the GOP. Absolutely the worst.

Ike is weeping.

BTW - Democrats, thanks for letting me sleep on the sofa while my burnt-down house is being rebuilt.

72. Damn right. Here in East Tennessee, I counted exactly ONE McCain sticker before Palin joined up.
After which, McCain/Palin stickers were popping up everywhere. And given Palin's tendency to use/betray others to get her to the top, if I were McCain I'd be watching my back. If she sees the writing on the wall (Obama victory), she might be doing little more right now than building herself a national base of rabid disciples for her own ambition.

48. McCain was doomed from the start. He had a bad hand to play.
Not that he played it all that well. He didn't have to choose the Rovian gambit. And he didn't have to make the grand stand Palin pick. But he was Bush's heir. And he was betting into the Obama juggernaut. And Obama has played a masterful game, never losing his dignity. He is the tower of power in this game.

If McCain was smart, he would have passed on this one and let another deserving Repub get ground up. He could have left the stage with some dignity.

Todays GOP -- going back to the '80 election, is built on an alliance of pissed off caucasians. Michael Savage, for example, said he was done with the Democrats when they embraced "reverse discrimonation" in the 70s.

Their hate for a multi-cultural, pluralistic America is what binds them.

70. I accept your premise, but I think that's just a part of their alliance.
There are the plutocrats, the religiously insane, the sexually repressed, militarists, and the racists and xenophobes. You could add to that the working class Reagan democrats, as long as they could be fooled into thinking that they weren't being ripped off. The economic chickens came home to roost. To a degree, Bush pulled back the shades on all their scams.

I agree with what you say, but that's only part of the dissolution of their alliance. The war, jobs, attacks on the Constitution, all played a part. Also Obama is a jiu-jitsu master. He let them beat themselves.

49. Nice to see the Rethugs on the receiving end of a bitchslap for a change.
They went over the top with their hate-mongering.

We called them on it.

They were forced to retreat, and couldn't hit us back after we slapped them silly on this.

Now McCain can be the one that's engendering contempt...

and I think it might have been shown on MSNBC, but I sure as hell can't find a link. I've been searching google and come up with nothing.

59. Someone suggested in another thread
that maybe the Secret Service had a talk with him.
