1. That's just wrong.
Who in the world would do something like this? Was it Ashcroft?

6. I think it's a lot better than the Hillary Clinton one..
But I don't get the flag emblazoned on her chest. It's like he's making up for having her look too African, but in a very stupid way.

Still, it's artistic and I like art. I gave it a Positive overall because it is an intriguing piece that makes people think.

3. It is a gorgeous piece of art work and if I could afford it, it
would be proudly displayed in my living room along with some other African art work

7. It would have been much more flattering to American culture if they covered her breasts.
I'm far from a prude, but it's not yet acceptable in our country for women to go topless.

28. No, I'm not kidding. It could have been flattering to her if she were fully clothed.
Yes, we all know the human body is beautiful but women can not go around public with their shirts off in America.

It's a fact.

I'm sure Ms. Obama will find just the right way to respond, or not. She has the same cool ways as her husband... she could easily turn this into a positive.

33. It doesn't capture her energy and it's insulting to reduce a black...
woman to an "African/Egyptian" archetype.

(After all, he didn't turn Hillary Clinton into a Viking Queen.)

I'm thinking it was created to make people think that the Obama's are more African than they are American.

19. I don't really agree
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 04:14 PM by FlyingSquirrel
I think the artist clumsily tried to avoid that by emblazoning an American flag on her chest. I don't think the artist has any kind of political motivation for what he is doing, I think he's just obsessed with female political figures (and other famous women in modern society).

As far as whether it looks like her, there's enough similarity. It doesn't look a LOT like her, that's for sure.

22. Um, ya it's freeperville.
Sorry, I don't see anything wrong with looking to see what kind of reaction is being generated. I don't see the statue as being something negative, I see it as more of a rorshack (sp?) test. How people react to it seems to be depending on a lot of various internal things - otherwise the overall reaction here on a Democratic site would be negative, which it is not.

24. 1. It looks absolutely nothing like her.

Is he one of those White guys who think, "they all look alike," or something? Jeesh.

2. The African look seems calculated to emphasis her "difference" from "real" Americans.

3. It's a fine bust overall ... if you ignore the fact that it is *supposed* to be Michelle.

4. Nice titties (which is why I gave it a neutral vote; I just can't vote negative against those titties).

25. Negative because of the titties
That makes it kind of disrecpectful. I can't really say "very" negative because well, it is art, and some art is fucked up. Also, why Nefertiti? Cause she's black? Yes.

32. It's a publicity stunt. It's "ironic," like his sculpture of Britney...
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 10:34 PM by Zookeeper
Spears giving birth and Suri Cruise's "first bowel movement." It reminds me of Jeff Koons; tiresome and deja done.

I can't believe anyone is naive enough to consider this "art," beyond the fact that he has the ability to sculpt.

(I'm an artist, BTW, and no, I'm not into Thomas Kinkade.)

On edit: For anyone who doubts the stereotyping involved here, note that the artist didn't portray Hillary Clinton as a "Viking Queen."
