Trying to shore up base, NASCAR Grand Marshal Cindy McCain goes to North Carolina

http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2008/10/10/trying-to-shore-up-base-cindy-mccain-goes-to-north-carolina/

With polls showing that Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has a shot at winning North Carolina, Republican rival John McCain is sending his wife Cindy to the state on Saturday to shore up what has traditionally been a stronghold for conservatives.

Obama has made inroads in North Carolina and made the city of Asheville his spot for preparing for the debate held this week. Plus, two out of three polls released this week have shown the Democrat ahead by as many as five points while the third poll showed McCain ahead by 3 points.

Cindy McCain, who has been taking a more prominent role in the campaign in recent days, will serve as the Grand Marshal at the NASCAR Bank of America 500 race on Saturday in Concord, North Carolina, the Republican’s campaign said.

In addition to seeking those NASCAR voters, McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, will be wooing the hockey contingent when she drops the ceremonial first puck in another battleground state, Pennsylvania, as the Philadelphia Flyers face off against the New York Rangers on Saturday.

1. You'd be more likely to find Cindy McCain at a polo game.

Half sister of Cindy McCain dies

PHOENIX (AP) — A half sister of Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, has died of Alzheimer's disease, the family announced.

Dixie Lea Burd, 74, died Tuesday in Phoenix. She had been in a nursing home for the past two years, her son Bob Burd said.

Cindy McCain and Dixie Burd had the same mother. Marguerite "Dixie" Johnson married Cindy McCain's father, the late James Hensley, in 1945.

"My family is deeply saddened by the death of my half sister, Dixie Burd. She had been very ill for quite some time, and it was difficult for loved ones to see her suffer," Cindy McCain said in a statement released by the McCain campaign. "I am hopeful that my family's privacy will be respected at this time."

Burd was a homemaker who later helped her family run six Hallmark stores in metropolitan Phoenix. Her son said Cindy McCain was protective of her and that they were close.

Another half sister, Kathleen Hensley Portalski, complained earlier this year that Cindy McCain wasn't treating her like family and announced that she was supporting McCain's rival, Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

Cindy McCain and Portalski have the same father. James Hensley founded Hensley & Co., the Phoenix-area Anheuser-Busch distributor, and Cindy McCain inherited her father's stake in the company.

A memorial service for Burd is set for Saturday in Mesa.

7. Cindy needs to remember when she picks up a weapon, the opponents' gloves come off...
First, she does not know what she is talking about. Some well-crafted questions could leave her in a quandry as how to answer.

Second, she has undisclosed financial information and questions about her avoiding a possible 20 years in prison for drug charges which remain unanswered.

10. Shouldn't she be heading back to AZ for her sister's funeral?
Or doesn't she care? Her memorial service is Saturday too.
