McCain's attacks fuel dangerous hatred-Frank Schaeffer(R) Baltimore Sun
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 11:17 AM by RamboLiberal
John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.

-----

Shame!

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

John McCain, you are no fool, and you understand the depths of hatred that surround the issue of race in this country. You also know that, post-9/11, to call someone a friend of a terrorist is a very serious matter. You also know we are a bitterly divided country on many other issues. You know that, sadly, in America, violence is always just a moment away. You know that there are plenty of crazy people out there.

Stop! Think! Your rallies are beginning to look, sound, feel and smell like lynch mobs.

John McCain, you're walking a perilous line. If you do not stand up for all that is good in America and declare that Senator Obama is a patriot, fit for office, and denounce your hate-filled supporters when they scream out "Terrorist" or "Kill him," history will hold you responsible for all that follows.

Thanks for posting this.

3. If anybody takes a pot shot at Obama after he wins the election,
McCain, Palin and their campaign advisers should be brought up on charges of conspiracy and accomplice to a crime.

11. My submission to his online contact form:
"I am sick of your lies and hate-mongering, incitement to riot and encouragement of all that is ugly, divisive and dangerous in our nation.
This is a sad coda to a once- inspirational story, of a hero who became everything that he once fought against. I have lost all respect for you, Mister McCain, and hope that you someday realize the error of your ways and make amends to the American people for the damage you have deliberately done to our society."

I know, it'll do no good, but I feel better having screamed.

7. Wow. I just finished reading his book, Crazy for God. Verrry interesting.
It filled in a lot of gaps for me about the birth of the religious right. It was happening while I was in high school and college and by the time I started paying attention to politics, they were already there. It really mystified me because I had been very involved in my church and went to a Christian college (not fundie), and the first I ever heard about the evils of "secular humanism" was when I overheard a conversation in a restaurant in Dallas.

Frank's father and mother ran a religious community in Switzerland called L'Abri. The religious right credits the work and writings of his father Francis as instrumental to the movement, but apparently the Schaeffers loved the fine arts and culture in Europe and were very dismissive of the typical American Christians who came to learn from them. Frank has some harsh things to say about Falwell, Dobson and their ilk and he writes with great regret about the role he played in helping build the religious right. A fascinating read.

8. THis is beginning to blow up in McCain't's face
Reasonable Republicans are now coming out and decrying McCain/Palin's tactics this week. Clearly, they don't want their party painted with the image that these two jokers are displaying.

10. Yes, now the responsibility lies with the rest of our country's elected representative's
to condemn this stirring of hatred and division. If not, they are as guilty as McCain.

12. This is the 3rd conservative denouncing McCain I've read about today.
Is it wrong for me to be joyful about that? I didn't think so. :)
