HUNTINGTON -- For the first time this election season, a poll shows Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama leading Republican Sen. John McCain in West Virginia.

A poll released Thursday by the American Research Group Inc. showed Obama with the support of 50 percent of likely voters in West Virginia, compared to 42 percent for McCain. The interviews were done Oct. 4-8.

While the poll showed men slightly favored McCain 49 percent to 46 percent for Obama, women favored Obama 54 percent to 36 percent.

The poll marks a decided shift among voters in West Virginia, where conservative social values often trump stronger Democratic registration in presidential races.

1. Not to play Debbie Downer, but
the internals of the poll look kind of questionable: http://americanresearchgroup.com/pres2008/WV08.html

In particular, the party sampling they chose:

55% Democrats
35% Republicans
10% Independents

Seems like an oversampling of Dems to me. On the bright side, Obama is leading with Independents by 12 points, so he probably is still leading in the state even with factoring in this oversampling of Dems.
