Questioner: 'I actually did' know Fannie
Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 3:34 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Michael Levine
I tried to get in touch via Facebook with Oliver Clark, the man who McCain said probably didn't know what Fannie Mae was before the financial crisis (at Tuesday's debate). Apparently others have done the same. He just posted the following on his Facebook page:

Ok I usually do not participate in blogs, but I have been receiving a lot of questions so here’s what happened:

1. How did I get to participate in the debate?
Well, as many of you know I went to undergrad at Tennessee State University. (Go Tigers) I have a Nashville area code for my cell phone.

...(snip for space but he has some funny stuff in there)...

5. How did I feel about Sen. McCain’s response?
Sen. McCain. Well, Sen. McCain answered the questions with attacks on Barack and did not address how this package was actually going to help out the average American. Not to mention attacks on myself, but that question is to follow. He did say he warned the public of the forthcoming crisis, which I guess was a good thing????

6. How did I feel about Sen. Obama’s response?
I felt Sen. Obama addressed the issue more directly then Sen. McCain did. Obama actually stated that the bailout package was going to help Americans buy homes and stay in their homes.

7. How did I feel about Sen. McCain stating “You probably never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this.”
Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person. I have a bachelor degree in Political Science from Tennessee State, so I try to keep myself up to date with current affairs. I have a Master degree in Legal Studies from Southern Illinois University, a few years in law school, and I am currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Memphis. In defense of the Senator from Arizona I would say he is an older guy, and may have made an underestimation of my age. Honest mistake. However, it could be because I am a young African-American male. Whatever the case may be it was somewhat condescending regardless of my age to make an assumption regarding whether I was knowledgeable about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

8. Ha...
I feel the same way. Unfortunately, my obsession with this damn election is precluding my creativity to a certain extent. I should be working on my novel. Instead I am here. I should remove the internets from this computer. lol

What Oliver went through on national tv Tuesday night is what I go through everyday at work. They look at me and think that I am just a black girl with no knowledge or a clue. But little do they know that I went to college, studied Political Science, speaks conversational German, and I am currently back in college studying Business Administration. And oh yeah - I hope Obama really kicks McCain's ass more now than ever.

9. Thanks for the hug but I am a strong person.
I am feisty in person. CP doesn't take any mess from anyone. I just don't like people reading my book without knowing my contents.

There are lot of Oliver Clarks in this country and that is what the RW is afraid of.

7. Didn't know his name!
Oliver Clark..it's always nice to put a name with the man in the story.

Is he the same man in the audience who tried to shake mccain's hand when mccain was doing that shell dance with Cindy and Obama?

When JFK was elected, I guess he was just under 40 years older than me.

All the presidents since him have been older than me.

GWBush is eleven years older than me, and McCain is 21 years older than me.

Reading that young man's comments in your post, and hearing the way John McCain spoke down to him made me think.

I'm now 51 years old, I don't want another president who is older than me, I'm too god damn old to be a great visionary president.

We need someone younger, I need a president who is younger than me. Someone who understands my generation and those generations younger than myself, not the generations of my parents and, seriously now, the generations that are heading into nursing homes.

I'm thinking that Barack Obama is perfect, just perfect.

13. I didn't think McCain's assumption was necessarily racist, just stupid
Just MHO, of course, but I can easily imagine him saying something equally butt-headed and condescending to anybody, except maybe an older man. Okay, an older white man. So maybe there was a bit of racism. :)
