Do you feel that McCain still thinks he can win, or
do you think his also-erratic advisors have cordoned him off in a hotel room to explain that the components for a statistical victory do not appear to be in place?

Do you imagine that he has an off-mike cadre who speak with him on the cruel facts of the defeat in front of them, or do you think his explosive boss-man temper has them cowed so much that they can't tell him what he most needs to hear?

2. I think there are some telling him "Just get it close, whatever it takes"
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 11:39 PM by Patmccccc
..."The media will help us out too just get it close" There are some VERY frightened assholes at the top that do NOT want to be held accountable for their MANY MANY crimes. They see that it isn't working out so well but it is all they have, planting seeds of doubt.

3. Obama is winning by about 3-4 points
Statistically that's not a really large spread. Races can change a lot in a month. But with this economy going south as fast as it is, I think the electorate will hold the Republicans responsible, and most Republicans office holders are probably pretty scared right now. Not that that is news to anyone here....

11. True -- the economy is going to be a firestorm in voters' minds
when they show up on Nov. 4th.

Things don't seem to be improving much, and the dwindling middle class is not going to be liking it much.

20. Obama is not winning by 3-4 points.
Real Clear Politics has Obama's average at 5.6% nationally.

That's pretty decisive.

5. Grampy is deader than Dillinger
if the dynamics of this election remain what they've been for the last three weeks. Their internal polls must be catastrophic if they are spending so much time and money simply to try and shore up the base with scare tactics that are repelling centrists. McCluck campaign now in damage control mode, trying to keep the base in line at the cost of an even larger defeat. The coalition of the religiously insane, venal and stupid assembled by Reagan is whirling apart at the seams. It will completely blow apart after the thrashing they are going to get on Election Day.

23. I like your prediction. Let the "work" of Reagan come undone
and splatter the great hall in millions of glops, and may the feral dog packs have at it with their insatiable tongues.

I've just about had enough of the conservative hold on my national identity.

7. This is scorched earth politics at its best (or worst).
He knows damned well his chances are slim. Like a desperate poker player he is going all in, holding queens, and hoping the flop drops another for him. Obama meanwhile is holding aces, betting them hard, and knows he has the odds in his favor, big time. McCain knows his chances are all but gone, but he still feels he has a shot, albeit a small shot.

8. They Are Planning to "Win" By Kicking Thousands of Democrats off the Voting Rolls
It seems our entire voter registration effort has been trumped twice over by their voter purge in some swing states.

He does not deserve an even tongue in cheek comparison.

Hmmmmmmm, how about McCain as Billy Bob Thorton's character in Swingblade? I reckon THAT I could get into. I always resented Billy Bob for taking away my shot at Angelina Jolie :)

Thanks for the laugh! McCrash, that is a REALLY good nickname. Fits with his pilot record, his handling of the stockmarket, and his campaign. Long Live McCrash!

16. Scorched earth policy?
Are they simply trying to create the maximum amount of friction - that is - class/race division prior to losing the election just to make Obama's first term in office more difficult?

18. Possible. Tom Hartmann this afternoon was talking about
how negative campaigning represses voter turn-out, and the inference was that a low, low turnout is McCain's only shot at these swing states.

22. They're worried about Senate/House seats...
I think that's what this is about now. They know they're going to lose the GE.. but they have to make it look somewhat close so people still think he has a shot and show up to vote. If not, then we not only have the presidency.. but like a 65%+ majority in the house & senate.. and that to them is worth protecting no matter what.

I really think that's what this is down to now.. protect as many seats and save them as possible.

24. He knows that he is on the verge of losing, but he still thinks that if he
can only turn it around within the next few days (rapidly becoming the next few hours) he still can win. He has soiled his soul searching for a buyer, but even Satan has turned him down. It is only a matter of time until we hear the plaintive Bob Dole death whine of "where's the outrage?"

27. Yes! "the Bob Dole death whine" !
"Where's the outrage" would be just the right thing for Dole's tombstone... in the Supply Siders' Cemetery.

McCain's running out of big-gesture moves. The "suspended" campaign move doesn't seem to have been a real game-changer.

to be outraged about. Poor Bob. He never realized that a man's desire for fellatio should exceed his grasp, or what's Viagra for.
