Talk me down, please please please!
I'm having a MAJOR meltdown...maybe I'm just tired from driving all the way from NC to FL today, but I'm so worried about this ACORN stuff. I can't find anything refuting the negative reports about Obama's involvement with them. I've read his website about it which denies it all, but there are pages and pages and pages and pages of people and articles listed via Google about him and the organization. Have the republicans found his Achilles' heel or is this just a swiftboat tactic? Is it old news or something new? I'm in tears.

21. I'm not "concerned", dammit
I'm sitting here crying over this. Read all of my posts and you'll see that I'm not a "concerned" troll or anything like that. I genuinely asked for some help with this and thought maybe instead of talking about hockey pucks or lipstick, someone would be able shed a little light on it. I read the smears website...I was just asking for a little more. The negative information seemed overwhelming to me. Sorry if I interrupted your little group.

24. WTF?
I am the volunteer coordinator for our local dem headquarters. I've made over 300 phone calls for Obama and knocked on over 100 doors. I go every Monday night to participate in the phone bank and canvass every Saturday from 10-12 noon. Just what have you done lately? I asked a simple question. Look up all my other posts. Apology accepted.

34. I'm the neighboorhood team leader for 3 townships
I've knocked on over 1000 doors during the primary (they keep me in the office on weekends to help out of state volunteers now which kind of sucks because I love canvassing) and took the first night off in a while because I'm sick and need to get mentally prepared for the shit that is coming for GOTV. I've been with Obama since the last week of February volunteering. I'm not even going to go into what I've contributed locally or nationally resource wise.

There have been threads on this subject that have resulted in TSing for people. I simply asked about your profile because if someone has been here over 2 months I'm more inclined to give an honest answer than to alert.

45. I know how tired you must be - I am data captain for our team
I also do phone calls when I'm caught up on data - made 88 calls yesterday and input all the results.

In the morning I have to generate lists for 6-10 teams to go canvassing after the GOTV training Saturday morning. We're staging canvassing out of my home Saturday and Sunday every weekend until the election and I have to generate the walk lists, hand them out and train the new canvassers as well as enter the data when they turn the lists in. I am hoping that our canvass captain will show up to help, but she did not last week.

Out team will be making calls two to three nights every week - I've got to have those lists and the scripts ready for them and enter THAT data when they turn them in. I set up six events in MyBO today - I still have to set up a bunch more to finish through the end of the campaign but the location for our evening phone banks did not confirm that we can use their offices. I'm not supposed to have to do that, but our phone bank captain dropped out last week.

I also volunteer at the Obama HQ three afternoons a week, do data entry and phone calls and train people to do those tasks. Since I am there regularly I end up doing all the contact work for our team, though the team leader is supposed to do a lot of the things I have been doing.

I hope I make it through to Nov. 4 - I have tendonitis in my right shoulder and arthritis in my right hand. Doing all this data entry and trying to keep up with news here is not doing them any good. Most nights I cannot sleep laying flat due to the pain in my shoulder - I spend them in the recliner but that is not doing my back any good. I've been operating on less than 6 hours a night sleep so long I don't what I would do if I had time to sleep more!

But when I get worn out I think about what it would be like if McCain-Palin won. That doesn't help me sleep but it does get me back to work for the campaign.

Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 10:01 PM by GloriaSmith
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/10/acorn_rallies_its_troops.php

Fact: ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field, but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic.

Fact: ACORN flags incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in, but these warnings are often ignored by election officials. Often these same officials then come back weeks or months later and accuse us of deliberately turning in phony cards.

Fact: Our canvassers are paid by the hour, not by the card, so there is NO incentive for them to falsify cards. ACORN has a zero-tolerance policy for deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the relatively rare cases where our internal quality controls have identified this happening we have fired the workers involved and turned them in to election officials and law-enforcement.

Fact: No charges have ever been brought against ACORN itself. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes.

Fact: Voter fraud by individuals is extremely rare, and incredibly difficult. There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. Even if someone wanted to influence the election this way, it would not work.

Fact: Most election officials have recognized ACORN's good work and praised our quality control systems. Even in the cities where election officials have complained about ACORN, the applications in question represent less than 1% of the thousands and thousands of registrations ACORN has collected.

Fact: Our accusers not only fail to provide any evidence, they fail to suggest a motive: there is virtually no chance anyone would be able to vote fraudulently, so there is no reason to deliberately submit phony registrations. ACORN is committed to ensuring that the greatest possible numbers of people are registered and allowed to vote, so there is also NO incentive to "disrupt the system" with phony cards.

Fact: Similar accusations were made, and attacks launched, against ACORN and other voter registration organizations in 2004 and 2006. These attacks were not only groundless, they have since been exposed as part of the U.S. Attorneygate scandal and revealed to be part of a systematic partisan agenda of voter suppression.

These are the facts, and the truth is that a relatively small group of political operatives are trying to orchestrate hysteria about "voter fraud" and manufacture public outrage that they can use to further suppress the votes of millions of low-income and minority Americans.

46. I believe you're sincere, and I'm sorry it sometimes is treacherous to
express a valid concern. People are just burned out on 'concern trolls'.

To activate your profile,
1. At the top of the page click on Options
2. It will open a new window and you'll see a menu on the left side of the page
3. Click on Edit Profile and you can fill in the info you want.

The index card looking icon next to our names is what people are referring to -- the same icon that's used for Options at the top of the page.

When you click on the one next to someone's user name, it will show the info like date joined, city where you live, gender, whatever stuff you choose to submit.

exactly who you say you are.

Some advice for you, in case you haven't noticed, over the top concern posts are not received well here. If the election were held today, Obama would be ahead by 90 electoral votes. He has broke the 50% mark in national polling and is leading by DOUBLE DIGITS in the gallup poll today (52% to 41%).

This ACORN bullshit is only being talked to death on RW talk shows and radio. It's the second installment of the repukes kitchen sink strategy and ain't working.

It's been a long and trying year, hell, it's been a long and trying eight years. I would suggest that you acclamate yourself with this site, join in and perhaps not start OP's until you get your feet a little bit wetter.

58. I know you're not a troll or a freeper
But you should really check fightthesmeers or search DU before freaking out. Most people think you're just trying to start something because there were already 50 threads about the same thing.

Should have been here in 2004 and during the primaries this year. It was ugly.

69. It doesn't seem to be such a big deal. I think you're overeacting.

74. Massive Fail (and explanation)
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 07:51 AM by Jersey Devil

OK, maybe I was wrong and you are legit, and if so, my apologies and a simple explanation for the allegations of multiple and fraudulent registration applications submitted through Acorn:

By federal law anyone registering voters has the obligation to turn in all forms received regardless of whether they are questionable, in duplicate or any other circumstances so Acorn could not refuse to turn them in even if they knew they were bad. In reality, if you have read Acorn's explanations, when they do notice discrepancies they turn them in as they are required to do by law but also send a memo to the registrar (or whoever receives them in a particular state) noting what they have found.
