What should I respond to this Republican acquaintance?
I live in Miami, Florida, an enclave of Miami Cuban-Americans that disagree politically with Cubans on the island. Miami Cuban-Americans have voted Republican for decades. I, of course, am a Democrat and will be voting for Obama.

The other day I received this via e-mail (a letter someone sent to a newspaper) from a Cuban-American acquaintance that is trying to get me to change my mind so I'll vote for McCain. The woman that sent me this is either a lunatic or an IDIOT to think I would ever vote McCain or Republican.

Anyway, please read what she sent me and tell me how you would respond. I don't want to insult the woman, tho my first impulse is to want to insult her (which I know wins no friends and doesn't influence anyone to vote differently), so I need some help.

From Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monday, July 7, 2008

Dear Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4 I celebrate America 's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, 'Praise the Lord.'

And when the young leader said, 'I will be for change and I'll bring you change,' everyone yelled, 'Viva Fidel!'

But nobody asked about the change, so

-By the time the executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away.

-By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed.

-By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing.

-By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him.

-By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status.

-By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes.

You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America ?

Would we?

1. Tell the fools to get ready for more of the same as they have gotten.....
If they feel good thus far, McCain will help them feel even better.

Also share my sentiments here, if you want to:

5. If she would like to know about the "change" Obama is proposing,

Then she can download all 200+ pages of Blueprint for Change from the Obama website.

This whole "we don't know what change he wants" is just dumb shit stuff. Barack Obama has written two books about his life and views, and there are oodles of issue specific information available at the web site.

It is no mystery.

6. To say "we don't know what change he wants" is not only dumb, it's lazy as hell.
The information is readily available, as you pointed out. They can't plug their ears and yell "I can't hear you!" one minute, then turn around and say he hasn't told them what he plans to change.

13. She did. Republicans ensure that Cubans are the only immigrant group that can step in here....
and receive automatic residency and benefits.

9. Well, that's just stupid. Come on - Barack Obama as Fidel Castro?

Obama has been very forthcoming about what his vision for "change" is, what is plans are, and how he'd like to implement them. All that information is there, free for the asking, on his website.

10. Quite honestly, I wouldn't bother. I'd delete it and not dignify it with a response.
But that's just me. I've lost the energy to fight stupidity for the time being.

11. Sounds just like the Bush Administration
-By the time the executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away. - Just because we aren't executing American's doesn't mean we aren't executing innocent people around the world

-By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. - Sort of like now. Everyone is equally in the poor house because of corporate greed and deregulation

-By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. - No Child Left Behind

-By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. - Like FOX works for Bush/Cheney as admitted by Scott McClellan

-By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status - Like Bush has done to America by attacking a country that did us no harm and spending us into oblivion do that the tax-payers had to bail out the system of bad investments

-By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes - Like all of those that left America because they couldn't stand see their civil rights being taken away

There is a serious problem in this country with critical thinking skills. It's so freaking scary!

18. Okay, what a f***ing idiot. Obama isn't leading a revolution, he's a Constitutionally elected
government official, running in a Constitutionally sanctioned election for a Constitutionally sanctioned position on a mainstream Constitutionally sanctioned party ticket.

If she really prefers one-party rule, then the onus is on her to explain why she hates democracy.
