CBS's Reynolds: Obama's Campaign Plane 'Smells Terrible Most of the Time'
By Michael M. Bates
October 8, 2008 - 20:32 ET

CBS News' Dean Reynolds may get in hot water with his mainstream media associates for doing the unforgivable: He's committed the truth. On CBS's "From the Road" blog yesterday, Reynolds wrote, "Reporter's Notebook: Seeing How The Other Half Lives." The reporter recently switched from covering Barack Obama's campaign to that of John McCain. His rumination includes these interesting tidbits:

The (Obama) national headquarters in Chicago airily dismisses complaints from journalists wondering why a schedule cannot be printed up or at least e-mailed in time to make coverage plans. Nor is there much sympathy for those of us who report for a newscast that airs in the early evening hours. Our shows place a premium on live reporting from the scene of campaign events. But this campaign can often be found in the air and flying around at the time the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" is broadcast. I suspect there is a feeling within the Obama campaign that the broadcast networks are less influential in the age of the internet and thus needn't be accomodated as in the days of yore. Even if it's true, they are only hurting themselves by dissing audiences that run in the tens of millions every night.

The McCain folks are more helpful and generally friendly. The schedules are printed on actual books you can hold in your hand, read, and then plan accordingly. The press aides are more knowledgeable and useful to us in the news media. The events are designed with a better eye, and for the simple needs of the press corps. When he is available, John McCain is friendly and loquacious. Obama holds news conferences, but seldom banters with the reporters who've been following him for thousands of miles around the country. Go figure.

The McCain campaign plane is better than Obama's, which is cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time. Somehow the McCain folks manage to keep their charter clean, even where the press is seated.

Obama's headquarters airily dismissing complaints isn't unexpected. After all, he is "The One." But in a period when linking Obama to unreconstructed terrorist Bill Ayers carries "a racially tinged subtext" according to the Associated Press and McCain's designation of Obama as "that one" caused "some in the African-American community to accuse McCain of racism," Reynolds has got to know that reporting Obama's campaign plane stinks is going to cause, well, a stink.

Reynolds' peers will not be pleased. He may have to validate his membership in the MSM Club with some strident anti-McCain coverage. I mean, even more than the standard strident anti-McCain coverage.

Ahhhh The poor poor press :eyes:

17. Could it be that the stinking factor is based on an increased number of reporters on a plane?

keep things clean at every minute of the day....the dirtier ones house is at any given time is directly proportional to the number of children one needs to take care of in ones house.

4. Don't kid yourself. Newsbusters isn't echoing this story simply because of the complaints
As the closing commentary from the Newsbuster a** clearly states, his angle is racial.

p.s. Also, be sure to include warnings when posting from Right Wing websites.

20. I think she's saying that you really, really want Obama to lose
So you're posting tons of anti-Obama shit on this web site as part of your little effort in that regard. The reference to history, as I understand it, would suggest that you were a vociferous Hillary Clinton partisan in the primaries, and that you are thus carrying over your anti-Obama stance into the general.

That's how I interpret the comment, anyway.

25. Hey, you asked what the statement meant, and I told you what I thought it meant
I made no judgment as to its veracity.

I just think it meant that you've never gotten over the primaries, and that you come here day after day spouting GOP talking points and playing up the Bradley effect and otherwise doing everything in your power to see that Obama loses, and the implication is that you're doing so because you don't want to be humiliated when Obama wins, given strong statements throughout the primaries that he couldn't possibly win (so, one could infer form the statement that you're actually a very bad political analyst or commentator, and that you were wrong through most of the primaries). All of this may be wrong. I wasn't commenting on that. You asked the poster what she meant, and I'm just giving you my interpretation of her statements.

Hope that helps.

30. Like I said, I was only interpreting the comment
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 09:08 AM by alcibiades_mystery
The comment likely suggests that you're really only now playing up the Bradley effect (supposing that such a thing has ever even been definitively verified, or that it continues to have relevance today, both of which are dubious propositions indeed) largely because Obama is up in the polls, and that you didn't really start in on it until Obama's poll lead became significant, and that your real reason for posting about it over and over and over again is to depress morale and also because you really really want it to be true (the implication being that you really want Obama to lose in order to avoid the humiliation of having been so wrong during the primaries).

That's what the post appears to be implying, if I'm reading it correctly. It also seems to imply that most people see through what that post suggests is your fundamental dishonesty, and that people on these boards (it seems to be the suggestion) find your actions despicable and childish, and that you have (perhaps) utterly destroyed your own reputation on these boards through your ceaseless work against the Democratic nominee. I don't know. Maybe I'm reading too much into that one post?

37. There will be no Bradley Effect this year
I too thought that a couple of months ago. It's real easy and appropriate to now discount the BE. You can just walk out your front door, talk to people and you see real quick no one is hiding anything. They either hate Obama with all their body, mind and soul or they are absolutely sick with this country now and will vote Obama. No one is hiding anything this year.

Seriously. The more active and dynamic the campaign, the less hand-holding and schmoozing the candidate will do.

21. Yes - let's not forget it's all about the press
And, as in 2000 and 2004, the campaign that does the best job of kissing their asses gets the better coverage.

I'm curious, though - does the McCain campaign get any demerits for having thei VP nominee alternately insult, manipulate, taunt, mock and ignore the press?

22. Oh, the poor media. They must be coddled...not!
Some reporters get all miffed if they are not treated like kings and queens. Obama knows the way he reached people and raised money is through the internet (thanks Dean for starting that). He doesn't really "need" the press and McCrap does, therefore Obama treats them like ordinary folks while McCrap bends over backwards to get them to like him. Funny how most still thin he is an ahole.

31. it could be that the plane simply has poor air circulation

If the worst thing about Obama is that his plane doesn't match the expectations of a reporter, then Obama is doing well.
