Obama Leads McCain in Heart of Bush Country
The good (and crazy!) news: Obama is leading in Highland Park?
The bad news: Doesn't seem to translate to coattails for our downballot Dems.

John McCain might be pretty confident about winning Texas, but it looks like he has lost the wealthiest part of Dallas — which is to say, the Park Cities. Texas Rep. Dan Branch commissioned a Baselice & Associates poll of his district the week after the Republican convention, and what he found was surprising. While McCain was enjoying a national “Palin bounce,” District 108 wasn’t feeling the love. Branch’s poll found that 47 percent of voters planned to pull the lever for Obama, only 45 percent for McCain.

To appreciate the significance of those numbers, have a look at the boundaries of District 108. From the north, it includes Highland Park and University Park, site of the future Bush library, in case you’d forgotten. To the south, it includes most of downtown Dallas. In other words, there’s a reason Branch is a Republican. That same poll found Branch leading Democratic challenger Emil Reichstadt 58 to 24 percent. In the Senate race, Republican John Cornyn was leading Democratic challenger Rick Noriega 49 to 40 percent.

2. I think Texas is going to be very interesting
Preston Hollow is where the Bush family lived before he became Governor and a news channel was doing a piece on a residential street a few weeks back and the only yard signs you saw were Obama.

4. Everyone shuts me down when I say Obama could take Texas
But I will make another prediction. On election night we will hear anchors on all the stations say these words:

"Texas is still too close to call"

10. I'll go out on a limb here and predict Obama will win Austin. And the Valley, too!

9. I hope you're right. If you are, it's cause McCain didn't pander enough to the nuts we have
My state is full of screwballs and snarly misanthropes. You'd think this would be a plus for McCain, but there's no person a misanthrope hates more than a fellow misanthrope. By not acting more than half-batshit insane, McCain may be getting out his Lone Star base.

There's another factor at play here. McCain's wealth comes from Budweiser. Real Texans drink Shiner Bock.

6. Ha! Isn't that where the Bushes are going to live when they move back?
They're not going to be very popular in the neighborhood.

7. I've seen damned few McCain yard signs in areas that were hardcore R back
in 2004 and the number of Obama bumperstickers outnumber the McCain by at least 4 to 1. If people are planning on voting Republican, they sure don't want to admit it. :-)

14. Nice to see you, too. I've got electricity back, although I think that's temporary.
A lot of the repairs have a "duct tape and baling wire" look to them. Me, I like my power lines 30 feet above the ground, not sagging loops about 12 feet up on leaning poles. On the bright side, the city has hauled off most of the tree corpses on my street. There for a while, I was wondering if we could up the price on our house by claiming we lived on a cul de sac. :-)
