Brokaw Reads McCain’s Mind
On MSNBC this morning, an exchange between Pat Buchanan and Tom Brokaw:

BUCHANAN: Tom, in the first debate McCain was criticized as being too tough or too mean. Did you get the sense he was trying to be tough at the same time last night and he was trying to be a nice guy and do it with a smile as you suggested he was on the offensive all night long?

BROKAW: I do think that, Pat. You could almost read what was going through mind when he was talking about national security especially. I just can’t believe that I can’t sell this case to the American public. This guy was in the Illinois State Senate and has not served a full term in the United States Senate and he’s only been to Afghanistan once, here I am trailing him when we’re at war in two different countries. That’s what it appeared to be that he was thinking and that was part of his style last night. He was trying to be the mischievous imp he’s been in the past but at he same time the serious commander in chief….

1. Brokaw is bending over backwards to excuse McSame's ineptitude
No one can believe he's actually this bad at politics.

But he is.

11. Riiiiight. How about arrogant, disrespectful asshole.
Because that's exactly what he was. Any time he tried to be cute and funny, Americans went "WTF??"

4. insane
Wasn't that exchange freakin' insane?? Brokaw pretty much blistered Obama and then tossed in a sort of last minute "Well, I mean, that's what he was thinking. Yea, that's the ticket. What he was thinking!" Absolutely ridiculous. I've been trying to give Brokaw the benefit of the doubt, but this was fucked up.

9. I heard Tom say that this morning
It reminded me of Bob Schieffer's interaction with General Clark in June. What McCain has done in his political career, or the prelude to it, has not given him the amount of national security experience that Brokaw, Schieffer, et al instantly give him credit for.

12. He can't sell it because of Iraq.
McCain was cheering for it early and said it'd be easy.

So glad Obama quoted McCain's, "Next up, Baghdad!" line. This morning on the local FOX morning show, they edited that one out when they played the other two lines about Iran and North Korea. Easy to see why.

16. I think Brokaw is right
That's what he appear to me. He ran out the same failed debate talking points from the first debate and looked shocked when they totally didn't work a second time. He doesn't respected Obama or he would never have done that. Brokaw's wrong he didn't come off as commander and chief last night he came off as shaky and trying his best to walk off the stage. A terrible night for McCain. He is done.
