What put the final nail in the coffin for mcsame tonight
I dont see it being talked about here but what i think will be the killer.

"My friends, we are not going to be able to provide the same benefit for present-day workers that we are going -- that present-day retirees have today."

He is going to cut retiree benefits. His last vestage of support is with the older crowd. And he just told them he was going to cut them off.

I think that line right there hands us Florida.

2. I do too. Anywhere there's a large retiree population should be up in arms
over what McCain said.

3. I think it's a tie between the SS issue and his new proposal for
another bailout! The seniors will slam him for tampering with their SS and the Pubs will slam him for what they already hated him for supporting the initial baliout and the idiot adds ANOTHER ONE!!!!

4. He did himself no favors tonight
I think this will actually be a night where the fallout the next day after people have had time to go through what exactly was said is worse than the first reactions.

12. From that perspective, McCain's "that one" comment may help him ...
... if it keeps people from talking about his plans to cut Social Security and bailout mortgages.

15. "That one"
I think you and I are on different pages with that quote. When I watched the debate and McSame used it he was referring to Barack as "that one" and not a policy opinion or fact. In my opinion I considered it condescending and low and am surprised no one picked up on it more.

20. We may be on different pages, but we're in the same book.
I found McCain's "that one" to be dismissive, at best, and immediately posted to DU on it. What my previous post was trying to communicate is that McCain might be lucky enough for that arguably offensive comment to overshadow his other debate shortcomings.

e.g. Endless arguing over the meaning and intent of "that one" will occupy the finite news airtime that could otherwise be spent discussing McCain's plans to cut Social Security benefits, for example. A net benefit for McCain, in my view.

5. Hello! McCain's "freeze spending" meme in the last two debates is chilling.
He would spend the next four years telling the country there's no money for anything while still padding the pockets of Halliburton et al.

Thanks, but no thanks.

7. Exactly, nobody gets any money except the usual suspects.
Sure, he mentioned veterans and entitlements would continue to receive funds, but we know how that would work out, wouldn't we?

It would truly be four years of hell.

8. Ding!
He hit that meme at least twice, the idiot. The whole point of Social Security is that while you're paying in, others are being paid to because they paid in earlier, then you are paid to as others pay in behind you. You can't just stop that midstream. Especially not when it's working just fine.

"All that money you paid in - too bad, so sad!"

NO. It doesn't need 'fixing' unless someone wants to steal it.

11. Yeah, that's gonna cost him. I thought that was pretty shocking.
He may have lost some of his base, as well, to the Libertarians with his proposal to bailout mortgages.

18. Not just the SS line, but his overall demeanor was NOT presidential
He's panicky (as opposed to mavericky) and it showed. We're in a crisis and people want reassurance, a calm hand and a cool head. He's shown neither.
