Such an approach is cheered within his staff, but they don't realize that a majority of Americans view Obama as fit for the Presidency... and so McCain treating Obama as some nothing (to be polite) will be viewed negatively by that portion of the population.

I thought that he had a slight hesitation before saying "that one" as if he lost what he wanted to say. Some of the other reactions on this thread--disrespectful, racist, rude, etc.--are what seeped out when he was stumped for the word or name he wanted. If it was a senior moment, his attempted recovery was about as bad as it could be.
