Just talked to a McCain voting friend.
She is FREAKING OUT because she thinks Obama is doing well in the debate and McCain is tanking and is going to lose. I had to agree with all of that!

Except she said "what's going to happen to our FAMILIES???"

I was like "what the heck do you mean?"

She explained she's scared of Obama. Actually SCARED of him. Like, terrified. Is convinced the Middle East is financing him so they can take over the US.

I just sat there on the phone, silent. What the hell do you even say to that kind of stupid? I asked her for support, proof, some sort of evidence and she could produce nothing. Of course.

I have no patience for this kind of shit anymore, so I told her straight up that her family, which is socioeconomically exactly like mine, is going to be BETTER OFF than they have been in a number of years. That I'd be willing to bet my left freaking arm on that.

And that the idea that Obama is some Middle Eastern terrorist plant is so far outside of the realm of reality or rationality that I categorically refuse to even ENTERTAIN such bullshit. I said it exactly like that. She's a fairly newish friend (mother of a friend of my teenage daughter's). But she actually seemed to agree.

Huh. The straight up "that is JUST BULLSHIT" approach works sometimes. She admitted she got it from "some emails" and it's good we were on the phone because I about sprained my eyeballs rolling them. I told her I'd email her Obama's policy positions straight from his website to her. She could read about him for herself. Including his ACTUAL biographical information, not some fear-mongering lies someone made up.

She said thanks, yes, do that. And I just did. Now if she ever brings up that shit again, I'll just ask her if she read MY email. I doubt I'll sway her to Obama, but I did suggest she look into Bob Barr and Ron Paul if she's unhappy with McCain and just can't vote for Obama. She brightened up quite a bit, said she forgot there were even third party candidates. I said tell your husband, too.

Hee. We live in Texas. I'm hoping to peel off some McCain voters.

But seriously--what bullshit lies. Ridiculous.

6. this raises a good point
now that America realizes Obama will win this thing, we will all have to play the nice hosts and "help" morans re-edumacate themselves.

better to assist them in their transition to reality than have them FREAK out upon landing in it and cause problems for the rest of us. We've suffered enough because of them.

8. Tell her what I told my brother in email
He sent out some hogwash about Obama being a muslim and was gonna grab our guns (we own a decent amount of guns, responsibly), he was the most liberal socialist blah blah blah.

I replied (in a "Reply All" fashion, there were like 30 people on the list):

"You do realize you sound like a crazy person?"

I love my brother, but he has drunk the koolaid.

Reason...if he were a terrorist he would not be in the Senate committees he's on, there are security checks and background checks...his history is an open book...tell her to listen to herself and to get a grip...

13. I'm very familiar with this scenario...
as I'm surrounded by people who are HATEFUL...like those at the Palin rallies...but it's because they're TERRIFIED.

They are terrified of Obama. They are terrified because they are willfully ignorant.

It's stunning and so depressing.

Bullshit lie ImHO that's being floated. All these people are running into an individual who professes to be afraid of Obama or not sure who Obama "is."

Mutherfuck them.

If they're scared, then let them vote for that fucking creep McSame.

Let their fucking kids suffocate from air pollution or die from some freak storm due to global warming and let them pay ten dollars a gallon for gas by the time they are adults. Let them live in a country where they have no rights, where they aren't represented and even if they have the means to live comfortably, they have to fear for their lives because so many more than them don't have that means. Let their kids dodge the inevitable attacks due to agitation from idiots like Sarah Palin and greedy war hawks like John McCain. If they fear Obama more than they fear the destruction of McSame Palin, then they deserve to have them as pResident. (Because NOBODY is going to really vote for and elect them though they could very well end up in the White House.)

22. scared?
If you listen to interviews of McCain voters, this theme of being scared of Obama being elected is common.
Scared of what exactly?

When I here this, it kind of scares me.

23. i think it's the racist undercurrent...
they wouldn't feel comfortable being in a 4room with him, trying to talk to him, putting themselves past their own crap about black men. it's like obama's grandmother who admitted that she was afraid when she walked past a black man.

they can say "muslim", "terrorist", but it's all code crap for their racism. i truly believe this.

26. Oh no, I fully agree.
She's fine to shoot the breeze with, but she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, that's for sure.

The funny thing is, my 14 year old daughter has been educating her 14 year old daughter during the last year about Obama. LOL!

27. Snopes
I sent a co-worker to look at Snopes, since I didn't want to explain all the ridiculous nonsense she was repeating.

On Snopes (dot com) she found lots of other nonsense (like Bill Cosby doesn't want to be a write in candidate. The sheer amount of nonsense shook some sense into her head. I don't know who she'll vote for, but she's learned to question things that sound like nonsense. And we had fund talking about all the Snopes things that aren't political. She's not someone I see more than a couple times a month, but I do like her, and not making the argument myself seems to have helped us stay friendly.
