I took a chance today and acted like Palin at work.
I wanted to see if it worked, if it "charmed" people.

My boss's boss asked my boss in front of me how my job is funded. This is not ever a good question to hear in my field. It might mean they're thinking "hmmm, do we really NEED that position?"

But for some reason Palin and her weirdness popped into my head and before my boss could answer I said, "Magically. I'm funded magically." And then I winked at her. (I'm not kidding on any of this.)

Boss's boss just blinked for a couple of seconds. Then they both half-laughed sort of nervously.

Boss's boss repeated the question and I said "we DO need to find out how I'm funded, gosh darn it, it's ALL about job creation!" And I winked.

This time boss's boss looked annoyed. Boss looked at me like "SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP."

Boss said "she's funded normally, not through Title I."

Boss's boss said "ok" and gave me a VERY weird look when she walked out.

So I'm telling you guys--it doesn't actually work in real life. It just weirds people out.

(Before you ask, YES, I really did all of that. I'm planning on telling boss's boss tomorrow what I was doing. She does like a good joke and she's hinted that she can't stand Palin, so I'm sure she'll laugh. But I wanted to try it out. I even have the same sort of hair and glasses--don't laugh.)

4. I actually have been really good about not talking politics
outside of DU and my husband. I keep it pretty mum at work, though most people would be on my side.

But this.....it was just too perfect of an opportunity to try it out. I know she'll laugh when I tell her.

2. Both bosses are women?
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 09:27 PM by moonlady0623
Women are hip to that trick. Men seem to be unable to maintain the appropriate level of blood-to-brain ratio.

On edit: ok that IS sexist. Let me amend: Many men, it appears, seem to be unable to maintain the appropriate level of blood-to-brain ratio.

i get in trouble a lot these days, just tired of the bullshit I guess, open mouth toads and snakes slither out.

24. That was the problem. You did it on women. Might had worked better on male bosses.

19. I would have made a heck of a college professor but . . .
I didn't think being in an environment thick with 18-25 year old females was the right spot for me.

Unfortunately, I am now just an unemployed former financial rocket science attorney.

I can explain the meltdown, and I even predicted it one year ago August. But I am still unemployed.

21. You reminded me of a history professor I had a HORRIBLE
crush on as an undergrad. I think every other girl in his classes had a crush on him, too. He was considerably older than us, maybe by 20 years, but rugged, tan, blond. Vietnam vet. Asian girlfriend. All of us wanted to get him away from his Asian girlfriend, but he wasn't having it, despite it being the late 80s and all the denim miniskirts we might have accidentally had hiked a bit too far up.

Ah he was gorgeous.

Wait, where were we?

I'm sorry to hear about your employment situation, it seems like it's bad all over, I just posted about my brother being laid off today. Things just SUCK. I hope you find another job soon!

8. Oh you mean the question she was asking?
I think so, I THINK she was asking because the equivalents of me in other areas are funded differently. I'm the only one not funded like them and I think they're just trying to figure out the origin of that.

(I hope. LOL.)

7. My boss did the Palin imitation in front of me. I'm not sure but I think she's
a liberal Democrat. We usually don't bring up politics where I work. But, she is from Idaho and said she can't understand how someone from Alaska can get a North Dakota accent. :dem:

16. Winkin, blinkin, and noddin, don't work on me. You should have
tried Sarah-phonics. Dropping "g"'s isn't enough. Misplacing participles and verb disagreement might work if you're lucky. ;);););););););););););););););););););););););) See? It doesn't work.

She'll probably bust a gut when I tell her, she has a really wicked sense of humor.

20. I think you have called it in most responsible jobs you can't behave as she did being evasive and >
unaccountable. It's the likes of that in the corporate world that brought us here really, the main way out is to reject it wherever we find it really.
