Volunteer deputy registrars delivering ****1,000**** registrations DAILY
to the Tarrant County (Texas) election office!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From voter registration drives!!

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/100408dnmetvoterregistration.d8cd7a2c.html

Dallas County election officials expect about 125,000 new voters will be added to the rolls this presidential year, with a net increase of 25,000 from the 2004 presidential elections. That’s a difference of a little more than 2 percent over four years, when the population of Dallas County increased by more than 6 percent.

(snip)

Tarrant County voter registration manager Patricia Benavides said thousands of cards have yet to be processed. She said the office’s mail has picked up, too. About 2,500 to 3,300 new applications arrive a day. And deputy registrars – those who are certified to register voters –bring in about 1,000 cards daily.

Weekend voter registration drives brought in more than 1,500 applications and she expected today’s drives to bring in another 1,000 applications.

In Dallas County, about 15,000 applications arrived last week, said Dallas County Elections Commissioner Bruce Sherbet. Mr. Sherbet has a pretty good record at forecasting voter turnout. He’s predicting 61 percent for this November, up from 58 percent in 2004.

2. My exact thoughts when I read his "prediction".

I notice they left Collin County out of their article...which I really want to know since it is MY county and it's gone 70-30 repuke in the last decade or more. But DMN is a repuke Belo owned paper so they probably don't want to show how badly it is going to be for our local repukes. Last I heard was our county office had to hire an extra person to help process applications and they were outright telling people to NOT expect their voter cards in the mail prior to the election. Which means county voters REALLY need to check the county voter database between now and Oct 20th (when early voting starts). As of a few weeks ago the stat was 23,000 new voters in our county since the primaries.

3. Have you or has your local party sent people to the office to volunteer to help?
Putting on an additional staffer may not be enough. We found very responsible, professional, careful volunteers and sent them into our County's voter registration office to help before the primary. Alphabetizing the voter reg forms sounds trivial but it speeds up data entry and helps them prep the forms to scan signatures for the database. The last day to register to vote was TODAY and we have early voting here in Indiana and it started TODAY - no kidding. Everyone who registered within the last couple of weeks has to wait until they get their letter to go vote so the sooner everyone is in the database, the better.
