1. Notes from a "mainer" for those concerned about this ...
- they're trying to make a lot of hay out of a Sept. 24 poll which showed Obama up by only 4 pts. This was while the VP pick was fresh and exciting, and before everyone found out what a troll she really is. Recent polls will show this to be a 7+ point Obama victory.

- the 2nd district polled the same numbers as the 1st district in the survey - no McCain advantage for the more rural part of the state. This bucks historical trends which had that area more republican-leaning.

- Obama's perceived 'white voter problem' theory is going to be severely put to rest in 97%-white Maine.

- in short, McCain is going to get seriously spanked here in Maine, and might help our economy by spending a few million in a futile effort to get ONE E.V. His real 'firewall' will come crashing down when he gets whacked in VA, CO, NM, etc - a combination that will make this one E.V. not worth a plug nickel in the end.

4. LOL, when Obama is ahead by 4, he's in deep doo. When McCain's ahead by 4, McCain's doing
great. This gets funnier all the time.

6. Tsk, tsk. Only 8 points ahead. Very troubling. We're doomed.

7. RE: True
There is a strong Republican Base up here, perhaps Bangor Northward...mostly the older voters from what I can see....but we are in NO way Doomed nor did I mean to imply that we were...but we do have to stay steady ...and call, canvas and take nothing for granted. The Bangor Daily News is well known for it's conservative reporting....and slant...and for them to imply that a visit from Sarah Palin could lock it up for McCain up here is laughable....
but that all being said the McCain signs do outnumber the Obama signs...so we can't let up with our efforts by any means...Meanwhile, we can be rest assured that peoples concern over their wallets and oil bills will keep the economy front and center...and they will vote Obama/Biden...

8. also remember, we're not a "winner takes all electoral votes" state
no way in hell hell McCain would ever get ALL FOUR electoral votes

(I laughed typing that out)

12. It's probably a headfake by the McCain campaign
to get Obama to spend money on defense and create the media narrative that McCain is going on the offense.

11. Doesn't Maine partition their electoral votes?
The McCain campaign is probably aiming at a single electoral vote here. Seems like a stupid strategy to me. They'll have to spend a lot of money on one electoral vote.

I think it's clearly a headfake by the McCain campaign to try to get Obama to spend some money on defense. Plus it creates the media narrative that McCain is going on the offense on the electoral map.

14. Maine and Nebraska
Obama is putting money into the Omaha market, basically trying to do the same thing in Nebraska. Big difference is that money spent in Omaha helps to shore up the Iowa vote, and Obama has the money to invest in this project.

Maybe he's running broke and changing his strategy now.

15. The article pointed out a couple of things
1. Maine is not a winner-take-all state. mcbush could get 1 delegate by winning one of the regions

2. The paper says the race is tightening

16. In a state that is not winner-take-all there should be concern
The republikkans are pouring money into one of the areas of NE because they're afraid Obama could win that one region (I think it's Omaha)

19. Here's a thought: why don't go go to BarackObama.com and contact the campaign staff
instead of announcing this "possible" weakness on a political forum. The former tactic would be appreciated wheareas, IMNSHO, the latter is not productive ... and potentially harmful.

21. Here's a bit for you...
I call Sen Obama's office -- often to give my input on votes and actions he has has taken -- as he is my Senator.

I also call Sen Durbin's office and have attended one of the morning coffee's that they host for people in Illinois when they're in the DC area

I call my Congressman Phil Hare as well.

So...Here's a thought...Why don't you take your sanctimonious pot-shots elsewhere

18. mclame is pretending it can counter obama's very real chances in omaha
the real story is that obama might score one electoral vote from kansas, which is not a winner-take-all state.

this made headlines, so the mclame campaign is trying to say, oh-yeah-well-we-can-play-that-game-too and pretend that they have a chance in maine, the only other state that's not winner-take-all.

as usual, this is just a stunt by the mclame campaign. the real story is omaha!

23. If McCain wants to waste money and time getting an electoral vote from the 2nd district
then that's fine by me. The southern part of the state is deep blue for Obama, which is going to bring 3 electoral votes (popular vote win for the state, 2 EVs, plus the 1st congressional district's EV.)

24. Maine Dems have an awesome ground game set up
Edited on Mon Oct-06-08 09:54 AM by MaineDem
They have already made over a million phone calls and knocked on thousands of doors (of people for whom they have no phone numbers.) There are about 35 campaign offices open compared to maybe 5 for the GOP. There are thousands of volunteers on the ground now and there have been since April.

I believe they will bring Sarah Palin here and she will do her wink and blink show and attract a crowd. But it won't match the crowd Obama got in a February snowstorm and it won't persuade a lot of undecideds.

That being said, the Second CD could be vulnerable and our people are working very hard and keeping it int he Obama column.

Media buys are cheap in Maine. I think the McCain camp will put some $$$ into tv ads rather than send a lot of staff.
