McCain's special treatment as POW was used as enemy propaganda
This bears repeating (original post http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7325596">here)

On June 5, 1969, the New York Daily News reported in a article headlined Reds
Say PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral, “ . . . Hanoi has aired a broadcast in
which the pilot son of United States Commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain,
purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises
medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner . . .” The Washington
Post explained McCain III’s broadcast: “The English-Language broadcast beamed at
South Vietnam was one of a series using American prisoners. It was in response to
a plea by Defense Secretary Melvin S. Laird, May 19, that North Vietnam treat
prisoners according to the humanitarian standards set forth by the Geneva Convention.”

IN OTHER WORDS, first McCain gained special treatment by telling them who he was - THEN talked about how well he was being treated, allowing the North Vietnamese to combat our claims that they were TORTURING our servicemembers!

Thanks, John. I'm sure your buddies appreciated that.

Oh, look. Some of them didn't.

1. Gee, now we only have to figure out whose propaganda to believe -- ours or theirs.
I don't think it is necessary to go after McCain's service. We have plenty of material to use after his military career.

4. There is a difference between "propaganda" and clearly provable facts.

McCain received special treatment because of who he was. That is proven fact.
McCain allowed them to videotape him saying how well he'd been treated. That is a proven fact.
This was used as propaganda by the North Vietnamese, to combat the truth about their treatment of our prisoners. That is a proven fact.

He would have to have been brain dead to not know they'd use his videotaped statement as propaganda.

F*ck anyone who says we shouldn't take off the kid gloves in the final month when we know damn well the Repukes are doing so. Fight fire with fire, that's my feeling. They can dish it out, they should have to take it too.

10. "F*ck anyone who says we shouldn't take off the kid gloves " Including Senator Obama?
I like his approach thus far, and it includes hands off of McCain's military service.

11. Of course he will not personally attack McCain's military service.
Or have his own campaign do so. Doesn't mean others can't, including 527's.

12. No way I am going there
I probably would not have survived being broken up like he was and then tortured. There is plenty to take him on with without resorting to this. I would probably have sung like a bird to to make it stop.
I can't think of anything lower than going there with this.

2. Allowing yourself to be used as a tool of propaganda
by the enemy isn't anywhere on the list of things that POWs are supposed to do!

I think the Obama surrogates need to be reminding McCaint of this.........

6. not that I'm defending mccain, but they changed the code of conduct
from vietnam to now because of this. they no longer make you hold out until your head explodes. they expect you to do your best. obviously, his best is low.

7. I don't fault him for telling them who he was or accepting the medical treatment.
But it was not necessary for him to make the videotaped statement about how well he'd been treated. He knew damn well that other soldiers had NOT been treated as well, and he SHOULD have known damn well that they'd take his statement and use it as propaganda to allow them to continue treating the rest of the POW's badly.

8. You know I believe that the NVA had a whole brigade to spare to make McCains life miserable.
Right ... how else to you see him being "tortured" every day. Dedication is one thing but, doesn't a guy want to get laid occasionally?
