Biden Explains Debate Moment Where He Choked Up
About that catch in his throat: in the moment, he "could picture Beau in the bed" after the 1972 car accident that killed Biden's first wife, Neilia, and their baby girl and critically injured his young sons. Now Beau, the 39-year-old attorney general of Delaware, was off to war, a judge advocate general traveling to obscure regions of Iraq, where the road isn't exactly the safest place to be. The memory of being a single parent mixed with worries about Beau to create "a lot of bundled emotions. It surprised me. I was hoping nobody noticed." Only 70 million or so did.

Bless you, Joe, and thanks. You're doing a great job for us out there.

1. He doesn't have to explain anything
He came across as human and real. But I would like to thank him sincerely for showing us the real Palin. She was stone cold and didn't miss a beat when he teared up.

2. It was authentic and the product of Palin's fucked up rhetoric insinuating Joe doesn't understand
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 05:01 PM by cryingshame
then her repulsive blindness to the emotion she just witnessed after Biden had choked up... emotions SHE helped engender- it was truly a reveling moment for BOTH candidates.

31. That did it for me. Sen Biden is a real person. I don't think it ever
can be completely brushed off. I can vividly recall my wife in the road after her accident, my thumb in her mouth so the fluids could drain (she was beginning to choke and I was afraid to move her head) whilst we waited on the ambulance. Later, in ICU as we discussed DNR, intubation, etc. She's fine now, but it doesn't brush off.

Joe Biden zoomed onto my list of favorite people, simply because he is human and can show it.

Any of the posters who admit to tearing up - I can relate.

5. He did not need to explain. I lost a son 20 years ago.
I still get choked up when I think of the last time he hugged me goodbye. It was a normal human emotion and one, being a mother, Palin should have honored instead of coldly bashing him the second he stopped talking. That says she is not normal or human.

47. Agreed. She went on just like some cold, robotic, automaton.
Tells you a lot more about her than any jabberjawing or aw-shucks'ing, or hockey-mom'ing she tries to spew.

Just call her Poison palin. She's a frickin' SNAKE.

BTW, appleannie1, my condolences. I'm sure it hurts as badly now as it did 20 years ago. A pain I cannot fathom, and don't even have the courage to contemplate. NO parent should EVER have to go through that. And ANY other parent in the presence of another mom or dad who revisits that kind of pain and chokes up - should be human and compassionate and kind, not just reverting back to the scripted snark and cold, calculated buzzphrases. What a heartless, cold, calculating bitch. An ice queen for sure.

6. I heard some pundit the other night saying that they thought it
was disingenuous for Biden to even say that at all. They were saying that Biden hadn't been accused of not knowing what it was like to be a single parent. Thus no need for him to say it at all. I thought, oh, here we go with the spin shit. He can't even make a heartfelt statement, without them attacking him.

7. Fuck Those Reptiles
They can not comprehend an emotion that is not manufactured as a ploy. Passive aggressive narcissist see the world as it relates to them. Fucking phony bastards. I cried when Joe choked up. He was addressing an issue and he has a real story to tell. He lost his wife and baby girl, he had two boys to take care of. Enough of their lies and fucking scoundrel behavior. I hate these MOFO's so fucking much.

Damn them to wherever. DAMN THEM. CRETINS. SLIME.

It came upon him suddenly, surprisingly. I completely empathized with him at that moment -- been there myself.

You can tell a fake emotion a mile off: the person has to work up to it.

10. That last paragraph about Obama is a keeper, too
Biden says Obama reminds him of Bill Clinton in his "confidence, cognitive ability, judgment" and intellectual security--that he can listen and absorb advice without having to prove he's the smartest person in the room, a critical leadership skill. He says he experienced an "epiphany" during a recent conference call on the bailout bill with Bob Rubin, Paul Volcker, Warren Buffett, Paul O'Neill, Joseph Stiglitz, Larry Summers and Laura Tyson. "He {Obama} comes on the call and says, 'Well, folks, sorry I'm late. I've got four questions.' He was in total frigging command! Here's a 47-year-old guy in one of the most complicated economic dilemmas anyone has had to face since 1929 to '33. And it was like, 'Bang! Bang! Bang!' I called him afterward and said, 'You sold me, sucker!' "

43. Joe Biden is a quiet hero
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 09:33 PM by MissDeeds
Not the kind of chest thumping, limelight seeking vapid dolt who uses personal adversity for political gain, but a real hero. Joe Biden quietly, privately chose first to be a father to his injured and motherless sons. He chose to be there during their convalescence. He dedicated himself to being a hands-on dad, catching that train every night from DC back to Delaware so he could tuck them into bed and kiss them goodnight. He is a true, real, American hero. John McCain and his running mate could learn a lot about real character and heroism from this good man.
