I am a heterosexual married Democrat who stands up for gays. What is
the issue or problem with that? I want gay people to have the same rights as I do.

No trauma, no nothing.

and I am, admittedly a bit disappointed in Team Obama's unwillingness to grant gay marriages the same rights as hetero ones.

No presidential candidate is perfect and certainly Obama isn't , but given the alternative.....

12. Where was the outrage?
I am a man who married a woman who told me on the night we met that she couldn't have babies. There was no objection by those who "defend the definition of marriage" to our childless union. It's not about "redifining marriage" or reproduction. They just can't have the goverment say officially that it's acceptable to be gay.

We've chosen not to have children.

"Evil"

Quiet Hecubus. We weren't interested in any church wedding either us both being atheists and all. The only part Church or State played was in selling us the certificate. It's stupid to call gay marriage anything but marriage if you are going to call what we have a marriage. Even those "sanctity of marriage" pinheads accept our union, they are about nothing but keeping gays and lesbians in the closet.

That being said I understand that if Obama and Biden come out and state the obvious it will give the republicans a stick they will use to beat our ticket as hard and as bloodily as they can. Will it work again? Maybe, maybe not but I understand the reasons they say they support civil unions. Don't really like it though.

48. That sums it up
It's not right or fair, but Obama has to get elected for even a chance to promote the changes we want in the gay rights arena, and that won't be helped by campaigning on the issues themselves.

13. And I want the government out of 'marriage' altogether.
The government has a rightful role in regulating contractual agreements.

The same applies to heterosexuals. Get "married" wherever, however you choose.

But before the law, gay or straight, its only the legal aspect of the contractual union that is any of the government's business.

I agree and support Obama/Biden on this issue.

31. Thanks for your kind thought. But...
you knew there would be a but right? Trust me, when I was in the 8th grade trying above EVERYTHING else to simply fit in the last "choice" I would have made would have been to be attracted sexually to my own gender. Believe me, being gay is not a choice. I got made this way. :)

34. Interesting
Did he really mean it that way ("choice") or do we all tend to speak in the cliches that we have become accustomed to? I read his post and frankly completely missed it, probably because I am not gay and therefore not sensitive to the issue.

I was talking about all kinds of lifestyle decisions, e.g. whether to declare oneself an Atheist or Christian, Democrat or Republican. I did not mean to offend. I understand completely where you are coming from and totally agree with your analysis.

My ex-wife, who is also the mother of our two children is gay, I love and support her, always. Drama? sure there was some, but it had nothing to do with her orientation, long suppressed as it was, it was NOT a choice.
