So much of it made me think about Sarah Palin! People and Dinos walking on earth at same time!

Maher and me and about 12% of the population thinks it is all made up crap. You might not enjoy the movie.

He's agnostic.

7. Well.......
Everyone is really agnostic. Atheist means you "know" there is not a god. Since you cannot prove God does not exist either then you cannot really be an Atheist.

Lets just say Maher does not believe in god.

That's almost exactly what he said the other night on The Daily Show.

13. Atheist means without god. "Gnostic" means you know.
Most atheists are agnostic. Since Maher has no god, he is an atheist, though he doesn't use the term. Since he has no direct knowledge (and no one does) he is also agnostic. :)

16. Not totally true
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 06:32 PM by Christa
Atheist means: without (a) god. It means the disbelief in, or denial of, the existence of a god, the disbelief in the existence of god or any other deity.

Atheism is the lack of belief. If one considers it from the point of view of its Greek roots: In Greek "a" means "without" or "not" and "theos" means "god."

Btw, I saw the movie as well and highly recommend it.

He compares it to believing in Santa Clause. Not much difference.

23. Mock what I believe is mockin a believer how do you separate that?
God's word says it's his heart's desire that everyone come to know him.
to me that means God understands not everyone will. so if God is understanding of that fact
I am too.

I don't believe in God because I was told to. even though I was. I completely rejected that training. I use to spend hours, for many years, with my atheist friends happily discussing how God didn't exist and people who believed he did were stupid.

Things happened in my life that lead me to believe that not only did he exist, but he was protecting me through out my entire life. You can call that crazy, or stupid, or all the other words I use to call bible thumping believers, but I believe. I believe because I came to that belief on my own not because someone said I had to.

But again I am not religious. I personally think religion gets in the way of developing a relationship with God. Religion is just filled with a bunch of dos and don'ts by the time you get done learning all the rules of the religion, God has has no place in it. IMO

I live by simple belief that God is Love. Honestly I don't care if Noah built and Ark, or Moses parted the red sea, but I don't question God's existence because I personally know for me in my life he is real.

And a movie like Maher made is just to Mock and make money in that mocking
I haven't seen the movie but I have seen several interviews he has done for the movie, and it turns me off. But again I am sure the Movie is funny. And he will make a lot money

28. Making the seperation is easy.
I try to treat all people with respect. Treating their belifs with respect means believing them. I can't do that for everybody.

How can you respect a person's beliefs when you think they're not true? And what if you think their beliefs pose a danger? Then what do you do?

WAY too many in this country are completely snowed and taken in. How can anyone say that theirs is the only true religion? I know, "Faith!" Fuck faith!

14. in w. europe, there's no social penalty for non-belief.
but some european muslim immigrants are plenty religious. those in the film are remarkably disingenuous - basically denying that passages of the koran say what they say.

the 2 catholic priests are the only sane believers in the film. and they're hilarious.

Kidding.
Let's see how the ratings compare between Religulous and American Carol. My prediction is Religulous will have Obama type ratings and American Carol will have McCain type ratings.
We'll see.

18. Bill Maher's interview
http://www.avclub.com/content/interview/bill_maher

The A.V. Club: The movie was really funny, but also in its way very depressing. You seemed to come out of these interviews laughing, but were you crying on the inside a little?

Bill Maher: Anything is depressing if you dwell on it. The fact that religion could end the world? Yeah, I guess that could be considered depressing. But considering that there's also a lot to laugh at, I think it's a good balance. We give people a good laugh ride… I've seen it with audiences two or three times now, and they're laughing all the way through. It gets to the point that the world could end at the very end, but I think we earned that.

AVC: What do you hope people take away from the movie? What can people who share your views on religion actually do?

BM: I think you can stop being so shy. The meek shall inherit the earth… But we don't believe that, we don't believe in the Bible, so why are we acting so meek? I don't want to start a movement that mirrors religion. I don't want to create the church of the non-believers where I'm the preacher and we're all gathering together and reciting things. That's what we don't like. We're individuals, and because we're individuals, we have a harder time making our voice heard—we don't fall in line like sheep. But it's wrong that we have no representation, for example. Congress has 435 members, and not one of them says he's an atheist or agnostic. That just seems wrong. When they talk about diversity in Congress, because they have blacks and Latinos and women—they all think alike. True diversity would be diversity of thought. And we've had eight years of a faith-based administration, and we saw how well that turned out. I just wish that the people who think like us would stop ceding the moral high ground to the people who drink the space god's blood on Sunday!

20. "people who drink the space god's blood on Sunday!"
Wow! Did you make that up? That's how I see it: People worshipping horrific torture. It's the pornographic depiction of oppression and violence, and it's used against children!

If an occupying force came in and started showing our children pictures of mostly naked people, being slowly killed in public, we'd have mass hysteria.

But if your own church does it, you're a "good christian?"

None of it has ever made a lick of sense to me, and how grown ups are so mindlessly taken is has always depressed me.

It's no wonder we elect assholes like B* and Gramps: We're just pathetically stoopid.

drinking the blood and eating the flesh of a space god (or a zombie, who returned from the dead) is actually a holy experience in churches.

29. I took my 15 year old to it today
And we really enjoyed it.

I liked that priest in front of the Vatican.

The ending was very powerful and caused one to pause. The kicker is that I don't see there is any kind of military solution. It is a matter of changing minds, and you could see what kind of task that would be.
