'... reminding us of the notions about trampy women who will use sex to get power.'
'Sarah Palin Winks At America' YouTube

Emptywheel devastates Palin's coquettishness:

For the record, I hate when male politicians wink too. Someone in the Senate--it might even be Joe Biden (though he certainly didn't do it last night), or maybe Chuck Schumer--does it, and it infuriates me that a politician would diminish his work by incorporating such smarmy body language into his shtick.

But it especially pisses me off that Palin did it.

It may not be fair, but as one of the trailblazers for women in politics, all women will be judged by the manner with which Palin approaches her campaign. And it is equally unfair, but a wink from a woman means something totally different than a wink from a man. From a woman, a wink is flirtatious. At best. To these commenters over at Reddit, it was far more than that.

.....

Yes, it is disgusting that these slobs immediately made this sexual--but they were simply projecting a common connotation onto Palin's gesture. Whether she intended that sexual connotation or not, she used a gesture that--particularly coming from women--has that connotation.

And so, from being a trailblazer that finally brought the Republican party to the place the Democrats were at in the mid-eighties, Sarah Palin has demeaned that trailblazer role, mobilizing all the tired notions about trampy women who will use sex to get power.

How dare you, Sarah Palin, take the responsibility you've been given and use it to cheapen the work that all female politicians do.

This is what is most offensive to me about Palin, aside from the ongoing ethics investigations against her in Alaska, and even more of her devious history, that the people heard nothing about last night during the debate.

Buoyed by the obscene influence of oil and money and backroom Republican politics, Palin sashays along the hard-fought road that many women toiled to clear for their daughters and granddaughters in the fight for socioeconomic and political equality. Palin so debases those struggles of the women who continue the long, hard fight today. Offering up Sarah Palin is the final backlash against women, orchestrated for 30 years by the anti-woman zealots of the Republican Party.

We know Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is a friend of ours. And you, Sarah Palin, are no Hillary Clinton.

1. You must give the woman credit for controlling herself.....
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 11:30 AM by Sarah Ibarruri
... when this first started she had her hands all over her body and was feeling herself up constantly when she spoke in public. She threw kisses, winked, and moved her skirt up and down up and down. Total ho. Apparently she does something not unlike a pole dancer, only dressed, to compensate for her knowing nothing and being a total zero. That's probably how she got elected to everything. How else? The woman is a complete moron.

12. :-) I'm just waiting for some more to come out on her adulterous affair with her hubby's pal
Apparently she was "lonely" for her husband so she hopped in this guy's sack.

4. That's hyperbole, right?
Moving her skirt up and down? Feeling herself up?

11. Hyperbole? Somewhat. but not completely. If you look at older videos of her....
She's constantly touching herself, her neck, pulling at her earlobe and winking and grinning, turning her head sideways, batting her eyelashes and running her hands down her thighs, blowing kisses, winking, when she's standing she's moving her hands up and down her skirt, when she's sitting she's running her hands up and down her crossed or uncrossed legs.

The woman CANNOT help but do a pole dancing routine. She has no brain, so she has to rely on stuff like that.

Now my guess is that they told her to tone it down. However, she was still doing the winking thing yesterday so they probably told her to continue on with that.

14. If she were doing public speaking and accidentally found a dildo on her podium....
I'm afraid I'd just have to turn off the frikkin' TV. The woman missed her calling.

3. More than just winking, she flirts shamelessly. She even wore a little black dress to the debate...

Biden showed great restraint by leaving $50 on her podium at the end of the debate.

5. Calling Governor Palin "trampy" doesn't help women ... or anyone
On the other hand ... I do secretly believe that she wants me ... ;-)

6. Beyond the wink ...
I feel compelled to bring up another element of Palin's seeming sex-for-power agenda: the get up. I love a nice sexy outfit as well as the next gal, but I'm sorry: those tight skirts and 4-inch stiletto "come-you-know-what-me" high heels are not something you wear to work in. And politics is work. I feel this throws women in politics back decades.

If a male candidate came dressed for a debate or town hall in skin-tight jeans and a muscle shirt, I'd say the same thing.

Hillary Clinton (whom, by the way, did not vote for but respect enormously) showed us how a female politician could look attractive and serious at the same time. Four-inch-heels and butt-hugging short skirts were not a part of it.

8. that's why the female viewer line went down whenever she did that.
It cheapens ALL women trying to move ahead in this world. I can only imagine what the QUALIFIED women who were up for various VP slots were thinking when she did that. She is SOOOO minor league. She reminds me of some girls I worked with when I was in media sales.. they would pull that shit to get advertisers to think they would sleep with them, just to get an order. And it made it tough for the rest of us having to fight off the lecherous old men who thought we were all like that.

9. Wow! I had no idea. I listened to the debate on the radio...
...and didn't see her winking. Until now.

I had a flashback to my younger years when I was dating. There was one perky young lady who I asked out and she said "no" but with a wink in such a way I actually felt good about the rejection.

10. I'd think that Hillary was watching the debate with smoke coming from
her ears--and I think she'd be absolutely justified.

Sarah Palin is a mockery of everything Hillary was. Where Hillary was genuine, Palin is a cardboard fucking cutout--a sorority girl who is way the fuck out of her depth.

15. It's true and then some---
I've nailed one of the reasons Palin bugs me beyond belief,

( besides the fact that she stands for everything I oppose)
( and she's unqualified to be VP)

She reminds me of the pretty, popular girls, the Soshes( Soches?)
as we called them in school who were mean, back stabbing
witches who would destroy anyone and anything that stands
between them and getting their way.
They believed their looks could open any door, sometimes
it did- sometimes it flopped.

I remember a number of them in high school and a lot of them
in junior high.

Joe Biden mentioned this, the mean kids analogy,
a while back.

Same mentality, same goals- ME,ME, ME!

Ugh!

16. But.. but...last night, Pat Buchanan gushed about "a fresh face" and "a wide, rich vocabulary."
That's funny, all I heard was *maverick*, *nuke-you-ler*, *white flag of surrender*, *hockey mom*, *Alaska*, *finger-pointing*, *doggone*, *drill baby drill*, *media filter*, *they hate us for our freedoms*, *there you go again*, *the surge is working*, *darn right*, *ya betcha*, *straight talker*, *Joe Sixpack*, .....

How insulting.

"A wide, rich vocabulary"? Pat Buchanan is truly out there.

Palin's responses reminded me of a Chatty Cathy pull-string doll. Or an 8-ball toy when the message "try again" pops up. Or a seventh grader spitting out a memorized passage in front of her class from the Declaration of Independence, just long enough for a check mark in the teacher's grade book.

All of this, punctuated by the smiling coquettishness of a high school homecoming queen runner-up, who snipes at the winner behind her back.

That the American people are subjected to this person as an ultimate candidate for the presidency, is a crass insult.

To John McCain and Sarah Palin: Thanks, but no thanks.
