So I'm told this morning that "She held her own." in last night's debate.
Mind you this is in Chicago and the comments were made by people who are voting for Obama. When I asked how exactly did she hold her own only one person answered and said she did OK when she talked about "energy conservation". When I pointed out to this person that the word conservation was never uttered her reply was "Oh never mind then". It seems to me people are just repeating this line over and over but when you confront them they can't tell you how exactly she supposedly performed well. has anyone else encountered this?

2. She held her own by not chewing on her foot for more than 30 seconds
at a time.

A MAJOR case of lowered expectations.

4. She didn't drool... there was no dear-in-the-headlight moment
But she couldn't stick to topic, and she clearly has no depth of knowledge in ANYTHING.

5. Let them think that
I'd say, "Ok, let's say she held her own. Is holding her own going to help McCain win Wisconsin? Or did she need to do more than just hold her own?"

7. Yes, here in PA....
.... it seems that because she didn't trip, belch, pass wind or faint, she did ok. Someone told me this morning that she was adequate. I asked them to elaborate and I got nothing - only that she was adequate. In comparison to what...... I wanted to know - but nobody, it seems, can answer that......

The truth is that this debate is already forgotten

The last two debates are what count

you noticed half way through she wasn't even speaking in sentences any more. She sounded almost bush like. Not to mention that she didn't even answer the questions that were asked.

on substance and content she failed

13. I still can't stand listening to her, but I admit, she did much better
than she did with Katie! I think THAT'S what most people are looking at. Compared to what she did in her last interviews, she did ok.

16. Her answers were just slightly less incoherent than on those interviews.
That's far from doing OK. I'm not saying that to you but that's what I told the people around me.

15. Well, she didn't break down and cry.
I think it's mostly the kind of debate "analysis" that was perfected during 2000 and 2004. Set the bar so low that anything short of a total embarrassment gets graded as a wild success on the curve.

I will say that she offered what I felt was a fairly unapologetic Conservative GOP position. For anybody actually watching the debate itself, I think they would come away with a pretty good sense of the vast difference between Democrats and Republicans.

For the vast sea of low-information voters who will get their analysis of the debate spoon-fed from the Noonans and Limbaughs of the world, they may come away thinking Palin "won."

19. All she did was to parrot answers
her coaches had fed to her. Whenever she got a question for which she had no memorized response, she simply answered with the answer for a sometimes completely unrelated question for which she DID have a memorized response.

The worst debate performance ever. Why she gets a pass for this, I don't know.

23. Mediocre, Stepford Candidate, but no major meldown. RNC set the bar really low.
RNC and the Republican owned corporate media set the bar so low that dear little Sarah could step right over it and thus be declared a success and warm the cockles of old wingnut Pat Buchannan.

Some of us were trying to warn folks that she knew how to do that standard right wing thing of plugging in meaningless lies into question categories and reeling them off on cue but they expected the miserable performance they'd seen her give to Katie's questions with follow ups.

We told them to check out the gubernatorial debates to see that she could do that meaningless garbage plug in stuff.

So here too-- form = words flowed fairly fluently, even though robotic.
No nervous breakdown. No total loss of words.
She was allowed to call that a victory because the bar had been set so low.
