2. Other. Any sexism is too much--but I haven't seen any in regards to her. She IS flirtatious,
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 10:39 AM by blondeatlast
flighty, and not very bright. Virtually all of the criticism I've seen about her is in regard to these points.

It's SPECIFIC to her--not to women in general, and thus, not sexist. And those on both sides who can't understand that don't understand what sexism is.

4. I have noticed that if something appears to work for her -
her side claims it's just "Sarah being Sarah", but if something appears to work against her, then it's her opponents being sexist.

I was on the board most of the night and only saw the term "ditzy" used to describe her--I don't find that term sexist at all.

43. When she uses sex to sell herself, she gets what she deserves.
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 01:55 PM by JenniferZ
As a former soldier in military intelligence, as a former fed, I was insulted by her performance. She was indeed ditzy and unprofessional. Her wink was demeaning to all women. Her flirty act was aimed at men. Every woman knows it.

She looked and sounded like a silly girl who has no idea of the importance of the task at hand. Her "folksy" talk insults the intelligence of every thinking person.

I don't give a woman a break just because she's a woman. I don't give men a break just because they're men. I call a spade a spade.

Edited to change ditsy to ditzy since that's how BAL spelled it above me.

8. How can there be sexism when she uses sex and beauty to sell herself?
She's the beauty-queen candidate--she is a sexist caricature of a female politician. A serious female politician (McCaskill, Hillary, Sebelius, Snowe, etc.) doesn't do that.

15. Nope. I believe the true sexism lies with the McCain campaign's insistence that all of Palin's
myriad melt-downs and gaffes are due solely to "sexism". They're playing the sexism card the same way they tried to pull the racism card.

19. There is too much sexism at DU period. Sexism, like racism, is reprehensible, regardless of party
affiliation.

Sarah Palin is sexist. John McCain is sexist.

That doesn't mean it's acceptable for members of DU to engage in the same behavior.

The threshhold at DU regarding sexist offensive posts has widened, especially since the primary.
What would have been unimaginable a few years ago is now allowed.

Very sad.

44. I agree 100%.
I think sexism is often akin to racism, but even harder to pin down. I see things here that are sexist and there isn't any sense that it falls in that category.

YES! The word "ditzy" is sexist, because it's not something anyone would ever call a man. Frankly, so is "b*tch".

Calling her on her flirtation is NOT sexist. Saying that she is bringing sexuality into politics is not sexist. Questioning whether she is the feminist that she claims to be is not sexist.

HOWEVER: questioning whether she's a good mom, but not having questioned whether Bush or McCain are good dads is sexist. Saying that she should be prioritizing her baby is sexist.

Asking how many men in DU would BOFF her if they had a chance IS sexist. I have NEVER seen a similar stream in DU about boffing Obama, even if *I* think there are women who would if given the chance. McCain isn't boffable in my book.

So, folks, please don't let what is happening outside of DU be used as an excuse to deny what is happening here.

28. Vast amounts.
I've lost track of the number of attacks on her that would never, ever have been launched at a male candidate.

Many left-wingers are "opposed to sexism" as a matter of tribe warfare, not on underlying moral principle; they line up on the side labelled "anti-sexist" or "feminist" on issues where left fights right, because that's the side their gang is on rather than because it's the right thing to do. Sexist attacks on right-wingers aren't something covered by tribe warfare, so we see lots of them.

that doesn't mean I am blind. Facts are facts and Palin is very ignorant. She has very limited knowledge on issues she should know as a VP candidate. As a woman I am furious that throw someone so dumb at us and think we should overlook it because she's a woman. Last night was her job interview and she failed.

I don't believe sexism is at work when one calls Palin on her flirty ways and her trait of using sexuality to sell herself. It's obviously her "go-to" move, and failing to comment on it is sexist, but calling it out is not.

40. Enough with Palins double standard!
Enough with everyone saying Biden is not allowed to attack Palin because she is a women. Are we, the american women, so stupid to actually say "I wont vote for him he yelled and said she was wrong!", Seriously this is beyond "PC". Palin herself is on video saying that no women should cry "sexism" if she cant take it in the man's world of politics. She herself says she finds that "weak" and would never want to be portrayed as that, she believes that being able to hold your own with the men, not be protected from them, is the way to show you are a strong women...which is one thing i can agree with her about. But has she played it that way...NO. She's been more then happy to handicap the democratic ticket in order to prevent them from attacking her...because she is a women and according to all political analysts, attacking her will not "poll well" with women...again, Seriously?

41. Having her on the ticket is sexist
I'm sure if you went through the most vehement anti-Palin posts on here, you would find they were written by women.

It is so insulting and offensive to me that she is on the ticket. She's there not only because she has the "right parts", there were plenty of Republican woman with a lot more know-how, experience and competency than her, she is on the ticket because of T&A -- there is no other reason.

In the 1% chance the Repubs pull this off, her being VP will set women back decades.

46. I think the answer is yes
I've seen a thread devoted to her shoes with comments about her ankles, the suggestion that she pull down her top to get votes, and other comments in that vein. I would not be against those comments except that there are no equivalent comments made about McCain, and those comments objectify women. I think it's bad form for a forum of progressives to have those kinds of comments.
