My R brother says McCain's 'yes' vote on bailout hurts him with his base *worse*
than Obama's 'yes' vote hurts him with his base.

My brother's an R and has stated he "might" vote for Obama this time. We don't talk about politics too much because we don't have the stomach for fighting with each other. He's not the belligerent type of R anyway.

He called me today to say he believes that about McCain's vote is hurting him with his base worse than Obama's did. And that Obama is sure to win. I reminded him Obama was up in the polls before the bailout vote anyway.

He thinks Palin might not do too well tonight and that she got really "nervous" in the Couric interview.

Bless his heart. He's a good guy but he listens to too much AM radio.

1. I agree... because of the pork.
He's spent so much time bragging about fighting against pork, and then turns around and votes for it. Not to mention his flip-flopping madly...

Of course, this is only the part of the base that doesn't listen to Limbaugh or his ilk. Those will be use whatever spewed talking points to defend McCain to glue their blinders on even tighter.

6. I think it comes off as far more "flip floppy" for McCain
at least to maybe the undecideds who might've been leaning McCain.

2. I have wondered if this could hurt Obama too...I've been canvassing
for a Dem Senate candidate and people are pissed about the bailout. My candidate is challenging Mitch McConnell, and is now getting support from people who are pissed at McConnell over this. It may very well get McConnell defeated (a very good thing!).
I'm thinking since both Obama and McCain voted for it, it'll be a wash for them.

7. Could be a wash
for them. My brother seemed to think the conservatives were far more pissed off about with McCain. Who knows. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the long run.

8. He's the only R in the immediate family
so when he tries out an R talking point on us, it doesn't go unchallenged!

4. I kind of wondered if McCain's vote would hurt him, especially
when he was being quizzed on Scarborough this a.m. about the pork in the bill. If his whole platform is getting rid of pork and earmarks, he should have voted "no" until they were removed.

5. Yep AM radio is pure poison.
Yet I find music so boring nowadays that I listen to some myself. I find it amazing how much misinformation they spout.

10. There needs to be some fact-checking
going on, real-time on those shows.

That would a blast!

11. The non fundie base of the GOP is livid with McCain over this vote.
Most Republicans are not Wall Street Republicans. They're people who think they pay too much in taxes to fix problems other people created. They don't care about abortion or religion. They care about government not spending more and taking more from their revenue.

They hated the House bailout, without the pork, and now they really hate this new bill because of the pork. I've talked to several today, business types, and that's how they came down. Will they still vote for McCain? Not sure. I think some will go with Barr.
